Modifications to stock air box?

Post by Space_Cowboy »

I was wondering if anyone knew of any mods that you could do to the stock air filter box (I have a GT) I want to get more air into it, but I don't know if I want (can afford) a full CAI...So does anyone know of anything? Thanks...

you could get a drop in K&N filter. It is just a high flow filter that replaces the stock filter, not an expensive CAI. it'll help a little bit I think.

Aside from ripping it out and letting air enter the throttle neck directly (not recommended, will prolly kill the engine from my understanding), there really isn't anything you can do with that stock box, AFAIK.Someone else was debating between a drop in filter and a CAI, s/he decided if you're gonna spend money on that filter, which is like $50 or something, you've already spent 25% of a CAI...so why not save up and go for it...you could also get a short intake, which, I believe, is significantly less expensive...

There is a way to remove the air flap inside the air box. When i go home I'll post the link. It was off a celica website.

what would removing the air flap do? How do you do it? Is there anything that has to be done that couldn't be reversed?

On the back of the lower half of the GT air box is a vacuum-controlled door. It opens under certain conditions to allow more air into the air box. You can either lock that door open or remove the flap altoghther (and plug the vacuum line) to allow in more air all the time. The only downside to this is it breathes in warm, engine compartment air.Base Vibes do not have this extra air door.

is it the same air that it would be breathing anyway? i mean...if i just had the flap open, nothing would actually be hurt would it? do you think this would really help?

sorry i forgot to post it. I'll send my self a reminder email to get it. the person that created the "how to" said it gave 1 or maybe 2 horse more. And you can always put the flap back....again sorry for having such a forgetful mind...

Agreed.I sense you'll only be disappointed with the lack of improvement by a simple stock air box modification.Go with either a short ram, or the best option, a CAI...
