New Stuff

Post by Amtron »

Put some new stuff in since the last time I put pics up:Finally hooked up the neons to a switch. It was getting to be a pain having to connect and disconnect them every time I needed to use my phone charger, or when it was too bright out to use them. Bought a NOS switch at Canadian Tire for about $20.00. My buddy and I used wired the neons to the power wire in back of my HU, and wired in the switch. This is an old pic before the switch of the lights at night. The wires aren't hanging out anymore.I bought some Momo pedals at Pearl Auto Care. They are currently held on with zip-ties until I get a chance to drill and screw them on. There's more pics of them in another post ( http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=34953 )Next thing I put in was a harness for my sub box. Taking the corners fast became a problem with the subs as they would move around. I was afraid of having a wire disconnect or something (especially the ground because it's very short) and was getting too lazy to keep centering the box. So I went to Canadian Tire again and bought the strap for just under $10.00, and ran it through the slots where the back seats connect. Does a great job and won't budge. Also, I put some red neons in my subwoofer box. I haven't got any pics of them at night, and won't for a while (explanation below). Just took off the plexiglass cover on the box, and screwed it into the back. Looks decent, but I want to add another in the front to light it up better. Also want to add lights in the holes in the bottom of box. Hard to get a good picture, but:The final thing I have done was definitely a failure ...The lights in my subs stay on even when the car is off, unless I physically go to the trunk and use the switch that came with the lights to turn it off. This was an inconvenience to me, so I figured I would wire the light to the switch at the front...I didn't connect it in the right spot, and long story short, the plastic on the wire started melting onto my hand and smoke began to pour out from the wires connected to the lights in the back, as well as every hole in the dash....*sigh*. Unplugged everything really quickly, and found that the ground wire running from the switch to the ground wire in back of the HU had overheated and melted. Took it out, replaced the wires, and now everything works fine. Except I haven't bothered to replace the wires for the lights in subs yet. Here's some pics of the dominated wires:

If so, does that mean your sub is still powered even with the car's ignition off? I probably don't have to tell you that it's still burning power even when not producing sound. I'd make sure the sub gets power from accessory or ignition otherwise you may end up with a weak battery one morning.

I guess it would also be draining power, since I did run the lights off the same source...but there must be some sort of ignition driven on/off switch in the amp, no?

It depends how it's wired. To be honest, I don't really know much about amp and sub setups. Is the sub powered just from the amp or does it have a power connection straight to the battery? You're right, the amp should also be ignition switched also, but is it? Who wired this stuff up?Where are the audio experts around here?

I can't see ANY of the pics, but I can tell you (and altimar) that ANY amp, will have a constant power line directly from the battery (hopefully fused within 18" of the batt) a ground and a remote wire... the remote wire simply shows the amp 12v, telling it to turn on... so yes, it's completely normal to have a constant 12v at the amp
