Power steering pump?

Post by 4azdmunky »

Had something interesting happen today. I noticed that my voltage was sitting around 10.4 while driving. then it jumped up to 13.4.When I got home, i had my wife turn the wheel while I was looking under the hood and noticed that as she turned the wheel the belt stopped turning. Seized power steering pump?

What year is your Vibe and how much salt or gravel does CO use? By the sounds of it, it may be...

It could be that the belt tensioner is not doing it's job, so when the belt encounters the increased resistance from the PS pump, the belt stalls. Or it could be that some other pulley is offering more resistance than it should, and when the PS pump asks for more, it's enough to stall the belt.

Like a delayed reaction, transferring torque to another area?

I was thinking more like the straw that broke the camels back. The crankshaft pulley drives teh belt, the belt stops when the reistance of the various loads overcomes the friction between the crank pulley and the belt. If the belt is loose, then the friction on the crank pulley is reduced. If the alternator adn the water pump, and the ac, and the PS pump all together put enough load on the belt, it could overcome the friction at the crank. Normally it wouldn't, but if something was dragging, then the extra bit fromt eh PS pump when you turn the steering wheel could be just that extra bit needed.Still, it could be the PS pump itself.

hadnt thought of the belt tensioner. Grrr I just ordered a new power steering pump. Its 05 base with a SC. I just added a Alutec crank pulley, however belt squeal was heard before I ordered it. Oh well, ...hopefully it will be the alternator, I've been looking for a reason to get a high output one.

the cheapest thing to do at this point would be to replace the belt and see if it still stalls when you turn it from lock to lock.It could be so hardened that it's simply slipping.

Well I ended up replacing the belt tensioner. It was rattling a bit. I also replaced the gatorback belt. It was still slipping with the new belt tensioner. The only belt i could get was a 4060850. I think this is too big, so I ordered a 4060840, its about an inch smaller. It looked like there was about 1" to 1.3" of slack in the 4060850 belt when the tensioner was compressed. I tried the 05 GT belt first, but its listed as a 406072? (72.4) but that was WAY to short. Does anyone know what the exact Gatorback belt size should be for a 1zz w/SC? I searched but did not see it in any of the posts, either here, MO or google.
