2009 Tranny the same as prev gen?

Post by Redox600 »

Hey y'all! Is the 5 spd manual transmission for the 2009 1.8 the same unit that was used on previous models? I have recently bought an 09 Vibe 1.8 with and am finding the 5 spd a bit clunky. I am wondering if will loosen up in time (I only have 400 Km on it) or if there are some mods that I can do to fix er up? I am comparing it to my friends 09 Honda civic 5 spd which is smooth as silk and quite impressive. Thanks for any input or insight.

On my 2.4l manual transmission, I noticed that the gearbox started to get easier to shift at around 5000 miles. When I first bought the car, the shifter was very smooth but at the same time a bit "laggy". At around 1000 miles, I noticed that there was a clicking sound coming from the shifter when I moved it left and right to select a gear. It drove me nuts, so one day I pulled the bezel off (around the shifter) and took a look at the linkage. I noticed that a spring that kept the shifter in the neutral position was resting on a small rubber piece causing it to stick. I took some silicone grease and lubed that area up and it got rid of the noise. At the same time, I also wiped off all of the stock grease and re-lubed everything with silicone grease (including the cables). This made a big difference in the way the car shifted. Hope this helps.

yes re-greasing the stuff is good, but also shifter bushings and even a short throw shifter helps. If it is the same tranny there were linkage bushings available too. All combined should improve the shifting immensely.
