I heard about this on the radio today. That is pretty awesome actually. It lets them set the top speed on the car to like 80mph or something.Personally I'm for it. Sure you could still get in trouble at even 40mph, but this would be a good deterrent.

Onstar has something similar on my HHR SS. You can call or go online and set speed limits, boundaries, all kinds of good stuff. If the limits are broken it calls or texts you and lets you know where they are, where they are heading, what they are doing (speed-wise) etc... Even the other day I manually set off my alarm to find my car in the parking lot and it texted me to let me know my alarm was triggered! Also, if your car is stolen, you can call and let them know and they will disable the car, so if the thief turns it off they will not be able to restart it.

I agree awesome idea! I like how that 17yr said she didnt like it as it was "hand holding" and would limit learning...uhhhh I dont think setting the speed limit at 80mph, radio sound level and seatbelt warning is holding a hand there youngin...now STFU lol

I liked the part about there may be situations she may need to go faster than 80 to avoid an accident. LOL! How about you don't drive 80 since there are very few areas that speed is allowed in the US and you wont have that problem. Not to mention the part that I liked. Parents would be more likely to let their kids take their car out with the limits. And with that notion the # of teens against the idea drops in half they claim. Makes sense. If my dad was gonna let me take the car out on a Saturday but I had to stay under 80 and keep the radio down, who cares. See ya later, give me the keys I"m gone.I like the idea through and through. Now if there was some kind of alert at Pep Boys like the merchandise alarm that went off letting everyone know that someone just purchased a rice-mod for their car, then maybe the guy would think twice about those green washer nozzles covered in fake chrome.Oh an DR! I never saw pics of the HHR SS, throw some up or point me to the right place!

It helped me when I was younger to learn the limits of my vehicle so that I could better evade accidents at regular speeds. Furthermore, there aren't a whole lot of parts of the country where the speed limits are 80, BUT, there are parts of the country where traffic moves at that speed and going slower could put you in a more unsafe situation than driving the speed limit. People from California know this, think of 680 where traffic on average moves anywhere between 75-80mph you would need to be able to get over the speed limit to safely merge if traffic is moving at this speed. I recall driving in southern California and pushing almost 95 (near Long Beach) and still having people passing me. On the other hand, there aren't a whole lot of places in the nation where the speed limit is over 80 (highest speed limit in NoDak is 75), there are parts of Texas where its 80, and furthermore, if these kid's parents are buying them a brand new car they are probably paying their insurance and maybe even gas so they really have no reason to complain.

teens suck at driving, they should be obeying the limit, if they want to test the limits of their car they need to take evasive/racing classes. Doing so on the street will not only endanger their inexperience self but many others. Ive almsot been hit over 20 times now by young teens, mostly girls on cell phones, changing lanes and speeding through lights/stop signs. I see no reason to allow them at 80mph when their grandma/pa's are going 55 and not getting into as many accidents on that same road

Earlier this year I took my then 16 yr old son to a Driver's Edge class. He got to practice panic stops, emergency lane changes and controlling a spin while driving 3 series BMWs and VW GTIs. Pretty cool, and it was free (I gave 'em a $100 donation). http://www.driversedge.org/

The way I most became familiar with my cars was pushing it through the the twisty mountain roads which had very few other drivers on it. Unfortunately there is nothing like that out here. However my base does mandate that I do a skidpad course annually. P.S. Driving in your state scares the hell out of me. Kudos to you.

honestly, I expect most kids to learn how to work the system better then their parents and end up getting around it. Probably end up limiting their parents haha

I knew what you meant though...I mean I was recently a teenager, I know what they do. I did some really retarded things in my car...found out the limited in unsafe ways, luckily I didnt hurt anyone. I would think autox or similar would be awesome for teens...the only issue is they usually arent smart enough to keep it on the track and showing off...is well "mandatory" for them. I love driving twisty roads!!! I do to this day go out and find them and drive spirited, safely to a degree. I live in Duluth now, northern MN, and when I go to the twin cities....its frustrating with bad drivers...matter of fact I was down there last weekend and almost was hit 4 times from people not looking when they lane changed

Yeah, I was driving down 94 and within the suburbs of the twin cities. Horrible drivers.
