starting

Post by Abby-vibe03 »

my vibe runs great... such a thrill to drive.... I am waiting on my mods to come in so that i can give a little back to her.. anyway.. i only have one issue... and that is with the starting mechanism.... I have a base manual vibe....black... hence abby... anyway.... in order for her to start.. the clutch must be FULLY pressed... i mean right to the floor... even if i am less then an inch out she wont start... she even stops the starter if i accidently ease up on the clutch when turning over the engine.... it is not tha big of a deal now... however come the winter time... i think that if a little piece of ice/snow or whatever else gets back there... i will not be able to pressed the clutch in as far as it needs to go... i kidd you not it has to be RIGHT TO THE FLOOR... or it will not play..... i was wonderin if others have this similar issue.. and if the that mechanism that governs the clutch=start can be modified or even taken out completly....... Thanks

Yes, this is a longstanding chronic issue with the manual VIBE. Some people have had some success adjusting the pedal/switch or added something on top of the switch to ease this burden. There are many threads on here addressing this very issue. Try doing a search (top right hand corner of the screen). You are not alone.

It may be in the threads above, but my experience was that I thought the battery had died in my Vibe until I remembered how hard I had to push down on the clutch for the starter to work and that I had installed floor mats the previous night...

I know it must be frustrating. But the idea behind that "feature" is to A) make absolutely sure the clutch is disengaged, and B) allow as much possible travel in the clutch pedal so you CAN disengage your clutch. My old Nissan 5-speed pickup works the same way. I'd been driving it for 15 years with less and less clutch pedal travel required each year. So I too would occasionally get miffed at having to press that pedal all the way down to start. But when the clutch finally wore out, and was rebuilt, I discovered I HAD to press the pedal all the way down just to get out of gear. I had to retrain my leg!Now you MAY be able to re-engineer the clutch pedal switch, but I wouldn't recommend it. You would be counteracting the safety reasons for the original system. Trust me, with time you will get used to it. If you really have to stretch to push the pedal all the way down, then try moving the seat one notch closer.KSNeptune
