Transmission Shifting Somewhat Funny (2007 Auto Base)

Post by zdkaiser »

So... My car is a 2007 base model Vibe with an automatic transmission. Lately I have noticed that when going down hills the car sort of shifts weird. I will go down the hill and let off the gas and it will shift down to a lower rpm (as expected), and then sort of do a weak kick, and jump up to a slightly higher rpm, and then go back down again. It is like a little jolt in the tranny, like it is shifting oddly. Also, when I am cruising around 40 mph, the car sort of jumps between gears, like it cannot make up its mind as to which gear to stay in. Lots of shifting it seems. Is this normal? I am mostly concerned about the slight kick when going down hills. I just noticed it recently because I am in an area with lots of hilly backroads. Other than that, the 250 interstate miles i drove on it two days prior the car seems to be running great. The tranny fluid looks good. It is somewhat dark and doesn't really smell burnt. THe car has 31K miles on it. Any ideas?

I would try the tranny drain and flush, then see how it acts. But yes when down shifting it should "kick" and the rpms will change as its going to a lower gear, which will kick up the rpms then they settle down a little. As for the gear hunting at 40mph, its known to do some "hunting" but if you are still under warranty, which you are, I would bring it in and have them check it out.
