Hawaii

Post by engineertwin2 »

Well, my younger brother is getting married on Friday Sept 12, 2008 in Hawaii. I will be flying out there Tuesday morning and plan on visiting Hanauma Bay, catching a luau, and surfing, but mostly just planning on chillin out on Waikiki beach. I fully expect Hawaiian to tap into this post, but has anyone else been? What did you like to do in Hawaii?I went 12 years ago and caught the Dole Plantations and Pearl Harbor and the Arizona...

Hawaii is a lot of fun. if you can, stop into the North Shore. it's beautiful and more laid back than the touristy Waikiki. I also wandered thru one of the malls that has the giant walk thru aquarium. I forget the name of it, but it's pretty cool. Luau was fun, snorkeling in Hanauma bay was fun and I also went on an ATV adventure. that was fun up until the part I started to hurl down the mt, aimed for the tree, flew off the ATV and rolled down the hill. that kinda hurt. Still had a good time though!

Ala Moana Beach Park is more popular with local families. If you're looking for souvenirs and cheap gifts, buy them at the swap meet (but do not buy the "gold" from Swap Meet or Waikiki kiosks, OK?) Swap Meet at the stadium (right across from the Arizona Memorial) is $1.00 per person admission and is open WED, SAT, SUN. only. If you do this, go early in the morning because it's *~*HOT*~* there. Don't forget sunblock, hats, sunglasses! The Nu'uanu Pali is free (ladies, DO NOT wear a skirt or dress there) and historical, just outside of downtown as is National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific ("Punchbowl") Aloha Tower observation deck is free and only accessible from 9-5 and they will go through your bags, why and what they're looking for I don't know. Next to that is Hawaii Maritime Center where there is an admission to get in. See (from the sidewalk-it's a liability, they lost the insurance on it and no one's allowed to go on it) the stripped down rust bucket "Falls of Clyde" before they sink her LOL. In the same area are the sunset dinner cruises but reservations are required. You won't see the humpback whales though since it's a little too early for that. You also just missed the jellyfish invasion. If you are renting cars, seat belts are the law here, as are child safety seats. Also, whereever you go, as with anywhere, do NOT leave valuables visible in the car (or on the beach unattended) If I can think of anything else between now and next week, I'll let you know since I work in town in the area of the Maritime Center/Aloha Tower and can pick up some booklets with suggestions and let you know ahead of time so you can make plans. I'll look for some websites for you too.

We have been figuring out what to do for surfing - do you have any recommendations on where to get lessons at a reasonable rate for some relatively unexperienced people? The Nu'uana Pali sounds interesting - out of curiousity, why can't women wear skirts?I will be sharing this thread with the family for sure!

Why no dresses/skirts on the Pali Lookout? BIIIIIIIIIIG wind gusts LOL. I'm here at work 'til 9 today. We have a booth downstairs with tourist guides. I will pick some up and give you any info on surfing I find. The hotel should have all this info too, but best to plan ahead. Glad to hear you're not staying in "Waiks". You will be right next to the mall (Ala Moana) and right across from Ala Moana Beach Park. Good choice!

Yeah...my fiancee says wind and dresses don't mix. I'm finally starting to get excited about this trip. For the longest time, it was just an expensive way to tag along on my younger bro's honeymoon, but now that it's here, I'm excited. We'll be there for the whole week (7 days) and for flights, hotel, and rental car, we are only at $1600 so far...not bad at all...food may kill the budget though.

I looked in the booklets and only found surfing school ad for that same one (Hans Hedemann) mostly ads for scuba, snorkel, jetski, skydiving, parasailing, etc. coupons. BUT...you will be in time for the Aloha Week Parade (Sat. the 13th at 9am from Ala Moana Beach Park to Kapiolani park.) Claim your spot on the sidewalk fronting the park EARLY because it WILL fill up fast along Ala Moana Blvd.

Got back late Saturday night...will post up pics tonight or tomorrow night...the only thing that sucks about vacation is trying to catch up. Unfortunately, the world doesn't wait for me to come back.
