Loose CV Shaft?

Post by Ro04Vibe »

Anyone ever notice any looseness of the CV shafts where they go in the transmission (particularly the passenger-side longer one)? I was at the garage for an oil change, and they got me to witness this looseness, saying it wasn't normal... All I can think of is that this is a 2004 with only 46000kms, and that the transmission shaft seals don't leak at all, so could this be normal? There's maybe 1/8"-3/16" play up and down. Thanks,

Um, I have seen play in the CV shafts before and it was never a big concern for me. Those CV joints do allow some lateral movement, even though they are designed to provide angular movement.

It's actually up/down play between the shaft and the transmission, where the shaft goes in. The joints themselves are tight and there's no excessive play in the axial direction. Thanks,

So you are suggesting either the bolts are stripped, loose, or the cast body is damaged?

I have the SAME thing going on in my Subie, nothing to worry about.. Like Engineer has stated, they are designed to have movement in them, in all directions.. If I could get under my car this weekend and make a little vid, i'll show you... they are even lose on the stub that sticks out of the tranny..

I went to the dealer to get things checked out... The "drivetrain specialist" wasn't there, but they determined that everything was normal. It's more play than I've seen on other FWDs, but then again, all FWDs are not made the same...To engineer: The play I'm refering to is if you take hold of the driveshaft between the inner cv joint and the transmission case and you move it up/down or front/back, you can see how loose it is in the differential...
