Ignition Key Chip

Post by milestarver »

I have a 2008 Pontiac Vibe, the car does not have keyless entry. I need to get a spare key made. How do I know if I need a key with a chip or if I can just go to the local hardware store and have one made.

Unless your Vibe has the Theft-Deterrent Alarm System (and I'm guessing it doesn't since you don't have keyless entry), then you can just get a standard ignition key made at a hardware store. My '08 Vibe has a lot of options, but Theft-Deterrent Alarm System isn't one of them. I think it's a pretty rare option on Vibes.

Our '05 has keyless remote entry but NO chip in the key.....a regular key should work fine.

Vibes don't need a theft deterrent system. A couple of years ago an Insurance rating company said that the Vibe was the second least stolen car out there. A Buick was first. I brought that up with my Insurance company at renewal time, and they verified it, and I got a little break.
