How long do CV joints last?

Post by wyatt89 »

Pretty self explanatory but my car only has 46k on it and I hear them pop on occasion...Also, how much do they generally cost and how much total for install? Thanks in advance!

Generally they should last at least 80,000 miles or more. My Subaru went 160,000 miles before changing them.

Yes, they usually last way more than 46 kmiles. I had one that started making noise on sharp turns in our VW Rabbit at about 90 kmiles, but just regreasing it and replacing the boot fixed it for at least another 25 kmiles (we gave the car away at that point and the CV joint was still working fine). The joints in my '87 Nova/Corolla are still original at 250 kmiles and so are the ones in our '97 Camry (150 kmiles) although the boots on both sides have been torn for a few years. The consensus on calling around was to wait until they start making some noises since it'd cost about as much to fix the boots as to replace the half-shafts.

On some cars, they will last the life of the car, on others, not so much... I can't say "exactly" what it would cost for a new one, but now a day, usually you replace the whole halfshaft (both CV's and axle) rather than a single CV joint... It's just more cost and time effective... That being said, I've gotten a few for my Subarus and I payed 75$ with core (150 without) for them on average at NAPA.. rebuilding them is another option, if you can find the parts.. Replacing a torn boot with the "bolt on" boots is just asking for failure.. and you can get a tool for putting new, un-split boots on a built CV joint, but cost on that is for shop use only..
