New Car Shopping (Dad)

Post by Whelan »

So my father is looking to ditch my grandfathers car that we are using right now. We have the 03 Jeep GC, and had the 89 Ford Crown Vic wagon that was given to my cousin. So my Dad took my grandfathers 02 Le Sabre Tour Edition. He wants to sell that and pickup a nice new car. Here is what he looked at yesterday, all brand new models:Acura RL-not a fan and neither am I, and for 50k, it seems to leave something to de desired.Acura TL-he thought the inside was too plain and boringVolvo S80-Great car, very safe, little pricey for what it offers though, and it needs premium fuel like the other two.Volvo XC70-We have both always liked this wagon, its rugged, looks clean, crazy safety features and all, he really likes the XC70.Hyundai Genesis-He has never heard of it, he drove by to peak at the Sonata for S&G's, and when he asked whats their best model, they showed him a Genesis. 40K LOADED with every option and a 4.6L V8 that can run on regular fuel. He loved it. I am gonna go drive it with him this weekend I think but man it is a looker. He was amazed by the car. I told him for the money and what it is, you won't find a better car at the money with more options. Hyundai has come a long way and I just read an article where they compared it to the Lexus GS350 and basically said the car was at or above the GS in every category.

If I ever wanted a huge luxury car, the Genesis would be a dream. Got to drool over on not too long ago when I had my Accent in for an oil change, they're amazing. Picked up a brochure, that's about as close as I'll ever get to owning one. I've heard nothing but praise each review I've read on this thing. The Tech package on those is fricken sweet - 17 speaker sound, nav, adaptive hid's up front, camera in the back, cooled driver's seat etc... Lots of gizmos to play around with. I too like what they did with the fuel requirements. You can run premium if you want and the computer will compensate to give you a little more pep, but you don't have to, it tunes itself down for 87. It's not as big of a gas hog as I had thought it would be either, 27 highway with the V6 and 25 with the V8.It's a lot of car for the money and from what I've been reading it seems to be worth it. I'm sure some won't bother with it because of the name, that's their loss.I hope you get to drive one, let me know how that turns out.

I'd definitely get the Genesis w/ the 375hp V8 in black. Don't care too much for the front grille or wood trim interior but those can be changed.

Yeah he sat in it and was really impressed. For him I think it's between the Genesis and I'm convincing him on the V8 cause the weight of that car would not work well with a V6 IMO. And the Volvo XC70. He was really impressed, apparently the sound system is what is used in Rolls Royce cars, which is impressive. The paint is also very elegant and thick. I really don't see this as some wannabe Lexus. Between this and the Veracruz that came out, Hyundai is really making itself upscale in some respects. Instead of offering a luxury division and regular division, they are trying a new strategy at the moment and offering both through one dealer. We'll see how it works, they may just get more high end models and then shift over to their own luxo dealer. Oh and it's the sedan. Coupe is not out yet until 2009.

I was quite happy with my twin turbo charged 270 hp Volvo S80 T6, but that's me. I miss that car.

Did you take him to the Pontiac Dealer to drive the G8? There is employee pricing that will be available. Did you take him to the Cadillac dealer to drive the CTS? I think that you should have him drive both of these!

Not to mention GM's 5 Year/100,000 Mile Drive Train Warranty. Reliability comes into question on the Hyundai one would think as the model is fairly new where the G8 or parts of it have been around for a bit longer.

My dad took my mom to the dealers to see the cars. It was between the Genesis which she really liked. And the XC70 Volvo which she loved! She has always driven wagons or SUVs and loves the Volvo. So I think that is gonna be the choice. I'll keep ya posted.

If she wants a Wagon/SUV, I bet they would love a Buick Enclave at the GM employee price.
