Idea for sub enclosure?

Post by breezd »

Alright, I really need to figure out what to do with my sub enclosure. The thing is just HUGE, it takes up all of my space in my "trunk". I want to be able to still have access to the spare tire *just in case*.I currently am running 2 12" subs in a large ported box, with the amp bolted right to the top of the box.I like the sound of my 2 subs, but I would cut down to one if I must. I would love to build a fiberglass box, but I don't really have the time, or the knowledge for that. I've taken auto body classes and know bondo, but not familiar with how similar/different fiberglass would be. So, I'm open for suggestions....

Glass can be as easy or as hard as you want it.... It's not likely you will get 2-12" in the well where the spare is, UNLESS, you mount them inverted and have a thin, wide box.. There are TONs of different ways you could go about the build, but it's going to cost you 3-4 times more to do it than a MDF box... The resin is going up in price along with all the other materials needed to do the job... You would be better off, going with a single 12 in a sealed box.... Ported boxes are generally larger... many 12's these days take less than 1cf total volume.. If you would still like to go through with it, let me know, I can get deeper into it..

The box I currently have is ~ 34W x 17D x 14.5H. So that figures to be ~3.5 cu ft. internally. The subs I am running call for 1.6 cu. ft. for a ported enclosure, or only .56 cu ft. for a sealed enclosure. Now I am assuming that that is just for one sub.BTW, the subs I am running are Bazooka BW1224...

Yeah, it sounds like you could cut your enclosure in half, going sealed... Are you planning on getting different subs, or using those? .56cf is prolly close to the size of the box they came in..

I've thrown together a small box for a 10" shallow-mount sub that will fit partly under the seat and is designed to double as a foot-rest.You might be able to do 2 of these (one under each seat) if you could find somewhere to put the amp.

At 4.5" you would need a thin mount sub, but it's doable.... they just don't typically sound that great, but there is a huge list of them here... guess who...lol... http://forums.nasioc.com/forum...21144If people weren't so concerned about the spare, there is PLENTY of room to build a false floor with subs and amps covered...

keep both subs and run them isobaric? should keep your enclosure size down and free up your trunk space, you will need to have some serious power going to them though....

It was used to get good output in a small enclosure, with the advent of small box subs, it's gone by the weighside... Cool concept, but just can't hang anymore..

meh, it still works well, it's just that because of all these subs now day that can handle 1k rms, if you are running two of them, you will need a lot of power to run them...isobaric sounds great, it's just expensive...i like nice small sealed boxes personally...

On that note, you could have a box fiberglassed for you that would essentially replace the cover and storage bin underneath the cargo area. The box could be designed to tightly accommodate the jack and wrench and could hinge up so that you could have access to the spare underneath. Amp would mount under your passenger seat and you'd be good to go.So long as you don't mind losing the storage space, or dropping the $$$ for some custom 'glass it should work out just fine.
