Last night I finished a 9am-9pm shift, (have another today, another tomorrow...)so I carry the laptop bag, and my dog (in her carry bag) out to the car, put them in and locked the door shut, my routine. (I always leave the front seat folded down, and put the bag on top of it so they can see out. I then put the seat belt through the carrier handle for safety.) After I closed the door, checked the pockets and realized oh @#$% I don't have my keys. Luckily I have security on speed dial on my cel. Security shows up and they got 4 or 5 guys taking turns trying to slim jim the doors, telling my dog, 'don't worry...we'll save you!' They could NOT slim jim the door. In between their attempts, they were asking "what year is this? What is this a Toyota?' I said it was a Pontiac Vibe, the sister of the Toyota Matrix. Why...are Toyotas hard to open? Yeah. The newer cars have something blocking the mechanism.' Eventually after half an hour of watching my dog pant and wonder what the heck was going on, they finally got it open and I almost cried. (in case of lurker crooks, I will not publicly reveal how they did it...to save all our cars!) The keys were in the uncovered CD-case-sized open compartment by the shifter with my wallet. I don't remember putting them there, but O....K... I have never ever done this before and promised my dog I never would again. Boy do I feel stupid and senile and now feel like I need to carry a spare. Doh!

I know how they opened it because I did the same thing, only no dog inside. I now keep a Hide-A-Key in case I have dumb-(removed) relaps.

I've found it handy to get a cheap key copy that doesn't have the rubber coating on the head so it's thin enough to keep in a credit card slot in my wallet.
I keep 2 keys on my person at all times. If I had dogs in there and it was a hot day I would not think twice about smashing a window to gain access.Glad it was night and not too hot for you and that all worked out for the best.
Whew, that sucks but at least it wasn't daytime! If it makes you feel any better, I locked 3 sets of keys in my Vibe one time. Had one of the remotes laying right there on the seat to taunt me! 1-800-ROADSID to the rescue.Like prathman said, the key that will fit in your wallet is handy! I have one of those too, but it doesn't work my ignition since it's not exactly the right key but it will get me in the door if I ever lock myself out again
