So I was able to get those caps off, guess I was just afraid of breaking something! But when I went to remove the cross bars, no luck! There seems to be a screw in the way, I guess a bit of a safety feature to stop the cross bar from sliding off if it gets loose. Is this screw important? Has anyone run into the same problem?

My son wanted his racks removed from his 04. Simply unscrew that screw and the cross bars slide right off. There is a kit on-line to replace the vertical portion of the racks, (what holds the cross bars). However, the caps are rather expensive and come unpainted.
