Check engine---- then just died.

Post by Zorren »

I started my vibe and noticed my check engine light didn't go off and was steady on. I gave is a little gas and it didn't rev up much. I backed out of the parking space and didn't have much acceleration. I got about 60 feet and the car died and i could not start it back up. In like 10 min i started it up but it just died again. I hope its not something stupid. Does any have any ideas. I remember some one had a issue like this but i cant find the post?

It mixes the good gas with the crappy stuff on the bottom and passes it along to you.

I think you should get your cel code read, that will point you in the right direction. From the sounds of it,could be your MAF sensor or IAC valve or even your ECU.Get the engine light read,so we know for sure.

What does a Powertrain Control Module cost if not under warranty?

A similar thing just happened to me tonight. I have an automatic '06 Vibe with 41,000 miles on it (purchased June/July '06). It's been running good and I've kept up with maintenance.I started the car, drove about a block and felt a hesitation, but it drove fine for the next mile, nothing out of the ordinary. Then all of a sudden it just died with the headlights & dash lights staying on. I waited a few moments, started right up & the check engine light came on. I drove about two blocks and it died again - that's when I called for a tow. While waiting I started again (approx. 25 minutes). It started fine w/ check engine light on. In park it ran fine, but dies when putting into drive or reverse and moving a few feet. The tow truck driver actually started the car and drove it onto the flatbed. it didn't die when climbing onto the flatbed - I thought that was odd.Anyway, I'll post what the dealer says tomorrow.

I had a similar problem with my 05 and I have now gone through 3 different PCMs... works good now though (keeping fingers crossed).

Toasted7, in what kind of timespan were they replaced? I've read a handful of posts on the subject and it seems some people had the PCM (and other parts) replaced several times while others had the PCM replaced once and the car drove better than before. The former has me a little concerned as the thought of the car going dead while on a main road or highway is scary.

I'm relieved that instead you were in a parking lot and it was under warranty and did not cost you! Thanks for letting the rest of us know. Here's a link to a Toyota bulletin about this PCM issue in 2005 Matrix with 1ZZ–FE engine. http://matrixowners.com/tsb/T-TC014-06.pdf

The verdict is in........PCM and Throttle Body. PCM is covered under warranty. Throttle Body is covered under the extended warranty I got when I purchased the car. I hit 36,000 miles in less than 2 years, so the 3yr/36,000 factory warranty ended 2 months ago. Some people called me foolish for getting the extended warranty. I heard quotes like "it's 100% profit for the dealer" and "maintain the car and you'll never need it", blah blah blah. I don't know the cost of the PCM, but the service rep said the throttle body (part only) is $750.You never know what will go wrong with your car even with regular maintenance. Paying the extra dollars for the extended warranty upfront turned out to be a good decision for me. Although I'm still behind even with this expensive repair I'm covered for the next 3 yrs./60,000 miles (got the 5yr./100,000 extension). I have to thank my wife for talking me into it.

Just want to give a quick update with the codes on the invoice:P0121 - PCM Internal FaultNecessary to replace PCMP0607 - TPS FaultNecessary to replace Throttle BodyThe Throttle Body was covered under the extended warranty I got when I purchased the car. Otherwise the cost would have been $912.89 + any taxes ($758.89 part + $154 labor). Cost for PCM is listed as "Warranty" and 0.00 under parts/labor.

I guess it was due to the error code. Dealer said there was a short in both the PCM and Throttle Body.
