Yesterday's WStJ had an article about the United Arab Republic auctioning off vanity plates, for example if you wanted your plate to be "Shiite 1" you'd have to bid against others to get that plate. Saeed Khouri paid $14 mil for the plate "1". "9" went for $4.2 mil. "29" for $530,000. Hong Kong does the same thingI am going to waste 42 cents and send the article to Ohio Gov. Strickland. This would make more money than his recent move to allow Keno in bars.

Or would you rather risk having to pay more??14mill for a #1 on your plate, that man should be shot in the face... with a bazooka

I sent by fax with hard copy by mail.Added a little "humor" - said that the vanity plate "OHIO SUCKS" might also fetch a good price - then added "Just kidding!".

However, this is classic supply and demand situation. Why should the state continue to issue these plates (I have seen one around here just reads just "E") for a $50 premium when they could auction them off for thousands. I do note that the low character plates seem to mostly be on expensive cars so the owners are likely the wealthy - and could afford to pay a premium. The problem will be that the wealthy will not want to be deprived of or pay more for their cherished low character status symbol license plates, and these same wealthy are the ones making the contributions to the politicians so this is not likely to go anywhere. On the other hand, the State has recently expanded its gambling activities to Keno games in bars to extract more revenue from a segment of the population that really cannot afford it.By the way - I am a conservative, but I know the difference between right and wrong, just and unjust..

The article said the proceeds from the auction will be used by the UAE govt. to build a new trauma hospital for traffic-accident victims. I would expect that this new hospital will be equipped with a lot of stuff bought from the USA.
