HELP - Shift P to R makes a "CLUNK" sound

Post by aooa »

Hi everyone.. just got my Vibe however, I noticed that after having the car parked for a while and I start the car to reverse out of the garage, when I shift from PARK to REVERSE, I hear this "clunk" sound like a metal hitting a metal. It happens mostly when the car has been parked for a while. Or sometimes I would hear it if I shift from D to R. If the car has been parked for a while and I shift from P to D (stopping quickly at R in the middle) I do NOT hear this sound. I also do NOT hear this sound when I'm shifting from D to P. ANY ideas would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks so much..

My guess is it's nothing...might just be the new brakes sticking to the rotors and what not...

Most likely it is the transmission park "Paw". If your garage is on any sort of incline when you park the vehicle will eventually recline onto the PAW. There is really nothing wrong with it...it can just make shifting out of park a little more difficult. If this is the case...you can stop it from hitting the PAW if you set the parking brake before shifting into park.-Savoy-

Is PAW the device that locks the trans in Park? If so, it shouldn't be a factor in the drive to reverse shift, and probably neither would be the brakes, unless they are really looseMake sure you are not moving when you shift into reverse, and also that you're not revving the engine. You can't stop the faster idle when engine is cold, but unless you're trying to get unstuck, probably best to shift into reverse at idle. How serious the sound is depends on how loud it is. I don't have the automatic, so I don't know what's normal.

This issue has been around for awhile. A few members, including myself, had this same issue and it went away shortly thereafter. From the most part, it seems like it is normal or the vehicle breaking in.Check out these previous threads on this issue:http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id ... ad?id=822I don't believe this is as serious of some of the posters are making it out to be. Read those threads over for info.

THanks everyone for all your time and input! It's greatly appreciated.Just to answer some questions.. the garage is pretty level. Also, when I shift from P to R, my foot is completely pressing on the Brakes and the car is completely stopped.STKOS79 - as Nick has already mentioned.. we'd appreciate ANY thing you can find out about this...THanks again!!

My car has about 9900 km on it and it still does the same thing when shifting from P to R or D. And yes, when the brake is fully engaged (I have an automatic transmission) I have kind of gotten used to it, but would like to know if anyone else has the same thing happening!

I kind of thought it might have to do with the high revs.
