Vibe Clear Coat Problem

Post by Surfer Vibe »

I can deal with the occassional paint chips caused by rocks on the road, but my clear coat is flaking/peeling off of my car. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, any idea on what I could do? Upsetting part of this is that the car is a 2008 and only 8 months old.

It should be covered under warranty. I'd try taking it to the dealer... that just doesn't sound right to me.

wow, got pics? I would deffinitly do as Kami suggested... The dealer is the only way to go right now, and donn't let them BS you either... That simply isn't right... There are also some others here from HI, you might want to search them out and get a Lynch mob going... lol..

if your clear coat is peeling due to a rock chip, its probably not a covered repair.

I was wondering how bad your clear coat/paint job has to be before it is considered covered under warranty, I have a Vibe 07 which I bought new and have only had for about 6 months, it already has about 60 rock chips on the front bumper, I am fine with few but 60 seems like a bit much, any ideas on whether its covered under warranty? I love the vibe, I just wish it was not made at NUMMI, seems like all of the vehicles that come from nummi have poor paint jobs. (corolla, etc)

Bottom line, they said I was out of luck because it was caused by "Environmental Issues". They said it was caused by bird poop. VERY UPSET about this..... Anyway, any ideas on how to fix/minimize the spread of the clear coat problem? The spot is on the roof about a foot from the attenna. The paint is still good, but you could see a white layer of clear coat flaking off.

Everytime I try to take a picture all I see is the reflection. It's hard to tell, but when you look at it from an angle you see it. Also when you run your hand across it, you could feel it.How do I do a search for people in Hawaii in this forum?

This is my second VIBE.... unfortunately, I don't think I'll ever get a third Vibe much less any Pontiac again because of the way the company dealt with my case.Anyway, my car has about a dozen rock chips on the front hood and a couple on the front bumper. Those on the front hood took off the clear coat and the paint underneath it..... all the way to the bare metal. I'm putting a heavy coat of wax on it to try to protect it and hopefully will find paint to touch it up later.I know how frustrating it is when you get your first blemish on your car, whether it be through a ding, scratch, or a rock chip. I feel the more people that speaks up, sooner or later the dealership/company will have to take notice.... but based on my experience, I think you have to move heaven and earth before Pontiac does anything about any paint/clear coat related problems. But I really do wish you the best of luck.

I don't think you could convince Pontiac that the paint or clear coat is defective. For the person with the clear coat problem ... all I can say is good luck. A friend's Honda has a defective clear coat and he hasn't been able to get Honda to repaint his car. He noticed clear coat problems on his car within 2-3 yrs. I'm not sure how far up the ladder he went, but Honda only wanted to repaint certain body panel(s) even tho there was evidence of problems in other areas. His car is no more than 5 yrs old now and the paint looks dramatically worse than the 15 yo truck I traded in earlier this year.

Type HI in the "state" field and click on the button. Today that shows 15 members from HI. Also, if you search for members from the state of "Hawaii", you'll get five others, so it looks like twenty of you. It helps to look at the number of posts, the last post date, and the signup date. Of the five from "Hawaii" none has posted anything here, so they are not very active. Of the 15 from HI, it looks like there are six of you who are active, have posted in the last couple of months. In states with more members, it helps to change the sort criteria. With 578 members from Michigan (MI) its better to do a desccending sort by last post date to see who's around and active, instead of hunting though 20 pages of resultsThere is also a US - Alaska & Hawaii subforum but it would be pretty empty if not for AKLGT. If you are looking for other island vibers, maybe you can start up a thread there to see who might come out of the woodwork. I bet there are more than twenty Vibe owners in Hawaii who have found this site, maybe you can convince them to stop lurking and become active.
