Rotor thickness?

Post by mntn-biker »

I am about to start the task of doing the front brakes on my base model 03 Vibe. Is there a minimum turndown thickness for the rotors? When I go to bring these into the local brake shop to get them turned down, I would like to know what this minimum thickness is so I can "mic" them for myself before they give me the sales pitch that I need new rotors....Thanks.On edit - I stopped by my local brake shop and they printed something off http://www.identifix.com. Discard thickness = .906"

Thanks for answering your own question. New rotors are probably pretty cheap anyways.

This from the 03 matrix manual. Are the rear brake rotors on GTs really only 1/3 inch thick?

Alright, so I mic'd these and they measure .965" and they are pretty clean looking. I'm thinking of getting them turned down to clean them up instead of going new to save $20. I'll put the $20 towards better pads. Is there any reason that I cannot go with ceramic pads instead of semi-metallics? The guy at the brake shop said they could maybe clean up the rotors if they aren't too bad but I would have to go semi-metallic. Not sure why that was. The brakes did not pulse at all before so the rotors should be pretty darn flat I'm thinking. Am I getting a sales pitch to buy new rotors from him?
