Vibe alloy rim corrosion

Post by BruceCounty »

My 05 Vibe OE rims have started bubbling- corrosion no doubt due to salting of our wintery roads. How have other Vibe owners repaired this apart from removing the rims and having them power coated.

They can be painted, you would need to have them sand/bead blasted first though to get all the old corrosion off, mine are doing the same on my 03'

My wheels on my 05 are doing the same thing as well... seems like it starts from in the inside edge of the wheel (like the paint and/or coating didn't make it all the way around the edge). I have other wheels I have on there in the summer, just use them the rest of the year.

Usually this starts where a wheel weight is on the rim, the wheel weight usually makes the clear coat on the wheels rub off, and then the salt works it's way under the paint and starts eating away the rim...when it starts to get bad you'll start having slow leaks in your tires (the bead doesn't totally seal and the air slowly leaks out...I took my wheel weights off the inside of my wheel (I have the 17's so they don't have wheel weights on the outside) and replaced them with stick on weights that go on the inside of the wheel instead of the lip. (we have a wheel balancer at work so I was able to re-balance my wheels after taking the weights off.)
