First time posting here. so heres my dilemma i guess you could say. I just took out some old sony xplods out of my 2001 dakota thats going to be donated. that and my cdx whatever HU that flips out.Now after reading through all that i could before starting to install much of anything, i am completely lost. the whole issue about having to bypass the stock m&t amp is really losing me. I have the 2003 m&t package and this is the equipment i have to work with:4 sony xplodssony xplod HU cdx ---houston acoustics 750w amp.now comes my question. Would i be best to remove the m&t amp, replace it with mine, and swap out the door speakers?Id like some help only because i am a complete rook when it comes to car audio.Tito
someone.......... help....? i already replaced the 4 stock door speakers with my xplods. my new headunit is next. so should i replace the amp as well when putting in the hu?please....?Tito
You would be better off bypassing the stock amp.... You could remove it, retaining the facotry plugs and stuch, to return it back to stock should you ever want to... You could easily get a wiring diagram of the M&T system and jump right onto the factory wires from where the amp used to set....This would seriously ease the issue of running new wire into each door... then all you would need to do is run power, and signal (RCA) and you are golden... I also have a HU install tutorial if you need it here somewhere..
thanks for the reply. i feel a bit more comfortable i think. few more question though. would adding my aftermarket amp make the speakers any better/louder/crisper... if so i might do it. and if i completely take out the stock amp, would my tweeters then not function correctly?sorry for all these questions, im a car audio virgin. thanksTito
I haven't installed aftermarket speakers, but I do have a HU and Subs/Amp. but the Moons&Tunes amp with stock speakers worked fine with my HU. I didn't have to do any kind of bypass with it.

Yes it will help, to a point, there is a lot here to go over, so for now, we'll just stick with yes, but once you get into an aftermarket amp then you have things like "gain" to deal with (which isn't all that hard really) and signal continuity and things, but that could be delt with later... Question 2. The tweeters would function the same IF you don't remove them by adding different speakers... I personaly would consider some of the GREAT budget components systems out right now. Systems like the Phenoix Gold RSD components and the Pioneer TS-A1720 or something like that... Both get rave reviews and both can be had for under 150$... and BOTH are a HUGE improvement over stock...Lastly, if you are a virgin to car audio, you "may" want to consider an installer... unless you REALLY want to learn, there is plenty to learn, and it's not always an easy road... I have many a post in here on places you can increase your car audio knowledge... just a search away..
yeah. when i said i was a car audio virgin, maybe i wasn't giving myself enough credit. im obviously not that bad seeing that i replaced the stock speakers with some old xplods. but i did need those specific questions answered and i knew i could turn to someone here. its just that the stock amp issues gets somewhat confusing because i wasn't sure if replacing speakers and the hu would make the audio sound bad or not. thanks for the info though. i've ran into a bunch of you posts throughout and have learned as much as i could from reading them. now all i have to do is get out and give it a shot.thanks again for all the help. im guessing im gonna just replace the hu and bypass the amp then. keep my aftermarket amp for a possible sub lke audiovibe has. THAT is a challenge. heheheTito
