when to change stuff

Post by darcmater »

I was at my local oil change place the other day, and like always they had atleast one thing they mentioned they recomend I change/replace that they could do for a nominal fee. I declined as usual. I believe they said they wanted to change the power steering fluid, but I don't recall. I tried looking but didn't see anything here, is there a master list of all the belts/hoses/fluids and their recomended milage change around here some place?

Yea, those quickie places try real hard to separate you and your $$$.Generally worse than snake oil salesmen.

follow the manual.I do all my own fluid changes as they are usually just as easy as doing engine oil.

The only thing I let those guys do is oil changes. The only reason I take it to them is cuz I'm too lazy to do my own. I do all the other fluids though.

I had my local Valvoline Instant Oil Change give me a stern finger waggle the last time I was in because I didn't want them to change my air filter and I had waited nearly 5k miles to get the oil changed.I just smiled and acted like a 'dumb girl' so they'd shut it. *shiver* like I don't know what I'm doing? I worked in autoparts for 5 years (was a hair from getting ASE cert) and can't tell you how many cars I've helped rip apart and rebuild over the years. I think I can manage an air filter on my own and GM recommends 5k oils changes anyways lolz! They would've crapped themselves if they had serviced my Altima... I used to go 7-10k with synthetic.

well from what i read on the user manual other than the oil, cabin air filter and the coolant at 5yr/100k I don't have to worry about replacing anything unless i spring a leak someplace on some system. I don't do any towing or drive in city on 90+ days or any of that junk. Which reminds me I haven't replaced my cabin filter yet and I just passed 31k the other day.

I change my oil every 4 months or so. The oil change place always want to sell me the oil flush. Scam. Only useful if you change your oil once a year or never!!!Air filter 12-18 months and cabin filter once a year, keeps the dust out. Get them in bulk online for less than 10 bucks each.I changed the manual oil and coolant drain (not flush) @ 3 years. Really easy to do on your own and can save big bucks.I've never changed brake fluid or steering fluid in any car I've owned. They are hydraulic fluid and while water can impregenate, I've never had a problem in 20 years of owning old cars. Andrew
