Do I have to bypass the amp in a 2003 to install an aftermarket stereo?

First of all, thanks for the forum. I just found it a couple of days ago and it has a ton of useful information on it.I have a Sony aftermarket head unit that is ipod ready. I had it installed in my Isuzu Rodeo and am trying to install it in my Pontiac Vibe.I bought the wiring harness, antenna adaptor and the mounting brackets from Best Buy yesterday and wired it in.When I plugged it in, I got no sound. It is getting power, but no sound.I took it back to Best Buy and after a few minutes of looking at the way it was wired said that I have to bypass the factory amp?Is this true and if so, how should I go about doing it?Thanks again for the forum and the great tips.
