2005 Vibe just purchased

After a lot of searching my wife and I decided on a 2005 Salsa-Red Vibe as our next car. Replacing our 1997 Doge Caravan - yes, we like to keep our cars in shape and drive them till they drop ;-)The dealer is offering an extended warranty on much of the car that covers the next 4 years and 40,000 KMs. The car currently has 75,000 kms on it. The extra insurance costs $2,000 and covers labor, parts, and GST, plus other things like trip interruption costs, etc.I can't see the point... but what are the opinions of other Vibe owners? Are there any particular items that tend to wear out within the first 124,000 kms that are worth having covered?Glad to have found this forum.Grant

Welcome to Genvibe. Congrats on the new Vibe. As far as extended warranties, I personally like them for peace of mind on expensive things like cars. However, in your case, $2000 is too much to pay what they're offering. Ask them if its a GM warranty or third party. Are you getting the Vibe from a GM dealer?

How many miles does that equate to? I suspect that your poll will get u a lot of no's. Most Vibes don't have serious problems. There are exceptions like bad tranny or something. Give it a good drive and take it to a rack and look it over real good. 60,000 miles on my 03 and not a problem one other than the dang tires wearing funny on front end. Changing from the z rated to street tires and hoping that takes care of it.Dan

Welcome! As far as the warranty, I think most of us would say it is worth it as long as something goes wrong. It's a gamble. If the tranny goes out, it will pay for the warranty.

I have serious issues with 3rd party warranties. I also say no to ext warranties as they are typically worthless with a car thats tried and true, reliability wise. with ext. warranties you also get your chain pulled more often than not and get screwed over. If you want an ext warranty try to get it though GM. $2000 is also a lot i think for 40km more. again see what GM's is. whats the power train warranty go to on the 2005's? is it 5yr? the biggest issue i think is like the cat converter which would be covered under the powertrain warranty. if properly cared for the car should go easy over 200k miles, mine is at probably 80k miles with not 1 major issue, i also cut all the recommended maintenance things in half, so 80k for spark plugs, i did them at 40k. etc. specially the tranny oil changes, I did those frequently as auto tranny's are much more susceptible to failure than manual.

I personally never buy ext warranties. I did get a 3,000 used car on my Corvette and it did cover an issue. I fix all my own cars thus no ext warranties for me. That said though, if you have even one computer blow on the car, that alone could costs hundreds! And you never know when one will go! So it is piece of mind for people that do not repair on their own or know how. If you too have normally never gotten one then I suppose you do not need one. My Vibe has performed like a top and I have only put regular maintenance items into it. And it has never left me stranded! Congrats on the purchase! Go put some miles on it!

I got the Gm protection pan with my 2008 Vibe.It covers me bumper to bumper (except emission control including the catalytic converter and wear parts) for a full 7 years/84000 with no deductible.It cost 1750,but I figure if there is something wrong with it, its probably going to happen sooner than later, and I am a single mom.

However the catalytic converter is included in the 36/36 but I don't think it is part of the powertrain warranty.

The 05's would have a 3yr 36,000 mile factory warranty... so the GM warranty would be done on the car... I think $2k for an extended warranty is a little high...if it were $1k for 40,000km or 4 years... then I'd consider it...but I truly think if you got the car checked out by a reputable shop, and everything checks out ok, you should be ok for the next 40k km...you could probably rebuild your tranny for $2k so even if there was a problem, it would barely be worth it...It's always a gamble... but I think for the $$$ it's not worth it...If it was a 5 year 100k mile for only $2k, then I would consider it...

I would not spend the extra $2k. You probably won't have normal repairs adding up that much. I was offered the same thing, and I am so glad I passed.

I find the Federal Emmissions Warranty info to be confusing but it seems that in the U.S. the Catalytic Coverter System warranty is 8yrs/80,000 miles whichever comes first.
