Is the forever stamp only good on a letter, or is it worth 42 cents on any mailing. Example, I have a 12.5 oz envelope to mail - first class postage is $2.87. Can I use 6 forever stamps (6 x .42 = 2.52) and add 35 cents other stamps to mail this?

Ok, not a postal worker here, but my understanding was that the "forever" stamp is a non-denominational stamp good for first class envelopes. I don't believe you will be able to add it as you suggested, given it's non-denominational status.EDITThis link states it is just for first class letters. http://www.usps.com/communicat...1.htm

I see that it says the proposal was for the Forever Stamp to be used for "any future single-piece First Class letter mailing".Looking at the postal website there are three rate categories for first class mail-1. Letters 1 oz, 2 oz, 3 oz, and 3.5 oz.2. Large envelopes 1 oz to 13 oz.3. Packages 1 oz to 13 ozPrior to the last rate increase I do not think there was any distinction between the three types.Maybe I wasn't looking in the right places, but I could find nothing on the usps.com site adressing this issue. It will be interesting to see if a 3 oz letter I sent today in large envelope using in part Forever Stamps for the 1.17 postage will come back.

I know there is no law against selling postage stamps for more than face" value - and can't think of any reason why the PO would care if someone sold them for less than face value. I got 5 books of Forever stamps at the grocery store on Sunday - they said they were raising their price on Monday just like the PO. My cc gives a 5% rebate on grocery purchases so my net cost was about 39 cents a stamp. It's a wonder I ain't rich!

I called 1-800-ask-usps and was told that these Forever Stamps could be used at their now 42 cent value on any first class mail including envelopes up to 13 oz. (Over 13 oz you must use Priority Mail.)That said - I don't trust getting a right answer from "ask usps" any more than I do asking a tax question of the IRS.
