installing a double din

Post by MRCN RCE »

aaron or aron, maybe one or both of you guys can help me with this one.i've got a double din dvd player that i want to install, but the problem is, i've never installed one of these before. i've done several single din cd players, so i'd imagine the majority of the install is pretty similar. i can get it installed for about $125 including parts, but if i buy the harness, i'm pretty sure i can do it myself. the installation instructions aren't too detailed when it comes to connecting the wires. the only one i need help with is the parking brake one, it doesn't tell me where to connect it. i know there's a way to bypass it by grounding that wire (i'm pretty sure that's what i need to do, correct me if i'm wrong), but i need a little help. i really want to install this on my own, and i know i can install it. the main thing is that i was told that it's gotta be installed by a shop to maintain the warranty. is this true??it's also got a TV antenna (just to the left of the unit) and bluetooth mic (right of the unit) that i need to run. where would the best place be to mount those?? i took some pics, but i only posted the links because i didn't want to reduce them. this way, i'm sure you can see the most detail possiblei'm going out of town next weekend (may 9th-12th) and really need this to be installed before i get there. i'll be off work on monday, so if i can't get it done on my own by then, i'll probably just have the shop i mentioned install it for me. another thing i want to do is recess the unit back into the cavity a little bit. what i plan on doing is removing the front of the stock HU (it's a piece of crap that has already messed up several cds, so it'll be a good thing to tear apart ), trimming the edges to fit, and putting it in front of the new one when i park. i'll most likely use a few small pieces of velcro to hold it in place. the new unit obviously doesn't have a detachable face, so i'm sure this will help keep people with sticky fingers away from my dashboard. this is the part i think i'll need the most help with. i'm sure i can figure this part out on my own, but if i can get a little assistance, i'd REALLY appreciate it. thanks in advance.here are the pics:http://i4.photobucket.com/albu...9.jpgh ... bu...5.jpg

about 335 shipped. i had to pay tax on it because the seller was from cali. otherwise it would've been 300, which is still an incredible price for the features it has. the main thing i wanted besides the dvd was bluetooth.

Ok, to start, i'm guessing you purchased this from Ebay?? If so, you already have no warrentee... 99% of ebay sales are NOT factory authorized and therefor are not covered in any way... the breaks of Ebay.. So, no need to an installer there... Even IF you were to have it installed at a shop local to you, if they aren't factory authorized, you are still sunk... As far as the safety lock out for the screen, I can't really help you with that, they all have different systems... most of which require you to hook it to the E-brake, so it "thinks" you are parked and not moving... It's usually EASILY gotten around... as far as the actual install, you are just going to have to get in there and play with it... you "may" be able to use the factory brackets to ISO mount it, you may not... You might have to have a dash kit, and use the brackets from it... You should be able to set it up so it is sunken into the dash some, but you will have a gap between the trim and the unit... Some ABS plastic found at a plastics place in the area (if you have one near, if not try US Plastics, com) and some black hot glue should fix that up.... as far as the dummy face, just rip into the old unit, or the old factory unit and remove the face, get all of the buttons and knobs and whatnot in place with hot glue, rip the display off the main unit if you have to and get it in place, and then if you have it, hit the back side with a belt sander, to "thin" it down... Then places something like felt on the back to keep it from scratching anything, and devise a way to hold it in place... This is all somewhat 'custom" so me being here can't help you, short of getting you started... You are a crafty fellow, so I think you can do it... Hope that helps some... I know it's kinda vague, but it's about the best I can do without sitting in the car...

You would prolly be best off to run the antenna up and over to in front of the rear view mirror (up the A-pillar and tucking in under the headliner) The mic, run it up the A-pillar and leave it sticking out right at the top of the A-pillar trim... so it's right in front of you basically.. EDIT: Wow, I just realized how HUGE that TV antenna was... It looks like it should be mounted to the outside of a window or something?? What does it say in the manual about it??? It's got to have some recomended installation spots?

i know, the antenna is a beast. i'll probably just put it up by the rearview window right now, and get a different one later.

Just don't even bother with it, I mean really, how much TV are you going to try and watch, when you can run DVDs now? Seems silly to me...

I had one installed a couple weeks ago, and the shop obviously installed it properly and wouldn't perform this go around. Is it just a matter of making the sensor grounded, or attached to another wire that is constantly on? I am thinking about trying to rig this tomorrow since I have all day...

I'll find and scan it up for you.Quote, originally posted by Sublimewind »Just don't even bother with it, I mean really, how much TV are you going to try and watch, when you can run DVDs now? Finally I found the article I was looking for. When I want to view tv I stream ORB's mycast to the p.c., once it buffers Im good.Best kits the only company making a double din kit the model # is BKGMK422http://bestkits.com/ViewImage....2.jpgIn order for this article to work so yocan fab up a theft deterent bezel is you would have to build off the factory bezel but should be fairly easy. Instead of using a piece of abs to fab up I would use the factory radios face and put some tape over it to keep it from being scratched. If you do this just start athe second pic I posted skippig step 12 because no holes will need drilled.Hope that gets ya in the right direction. If you wanthe fulsize just IM me your e-mail and I can send itAron

thanks aron, this looks like it'll work out really good.my email is in my profile, but i'll send you an IM anywaythat kit looks like it'll be perfect, but it's listed for the 03-04 model year. i'm assuming everything's the same for my 05, but that kit wasn't shown for 05-06 . how can i buy it from them?? i didn't see a way to order it from the site, do i have to find a dealer??i got a cheap kit from walmart for like 8 bucks and was planning on just opening up the pocket at the bottom of the kit to secure the unit temporarily until i can find a true double din kit.
