Quations on Oil pan gasket, tranny flush, new spark plugs, new brakes, install CAI

Post by jasonisnuts »

I have a 2003 AWD Vibe and was told that I need a new oil pan gasket and a transmission fluid flush when I recently got new tires. How difficult would either of those tasks be for me to try on my own? While I am at it I would like to do some preventative maintenance/upgrades and flush my radiator, install new front brake pads, and install the CAI I got last year. Think I could do this all in an day or should I take the car in for a "professional" to do some of the above? Thanks!Jason

It's not that hard to do.The oil pan gasket maybe the hardest of the ones you mentioned. The tranny fluid (depending on mileage) just needs a drain and fill and the filter is a screen(you can get away without cleaning it),there's a drain plug on the tranny pan to drain the fluid with ease.If you are confident enough to try it,then go for it.

First of all, do you trust the tire place enough to believe what they said? In my experience they often push services that really aren't needed. If you have a trusted mechanic or mechanically inclined friend, I would probably get a second opinion. What's your mileage and has the tranny fluid ever been flushed?Kevera's right, the oil pan gasket might be a bit much unless you're at least very comfortable with changing oil, spark plugs, those types of things. If you're new to DIY car maintenance, the other tasks are perfect starter jobs. Let us know if you need any help with the radiator or brake pads. Good luck!

changing auto tranny oil...well 4qrts of it, its JUST like changing engine oil. I did it herehttp://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=28967repeated that 5 times every oil change (ever 3k miles) so all/most of the tranny oil was new/er and after each time it would shift so much better. No need for a new gasket if you dont drop the pan.

Is anything leaking from your oil pan? Otherwise there's no need to change anything. Oh, the oil pan doesn't have a gasket, it's a seal that you squeeze on, like tooth paste. Once you remove the pan (which is a true pain in the (removed)), you'l need to clean the heck out of it and get all the old goop off of both the pan and the engine side.
