Six Cylinder?

Post by malonem1968 »

I was looking for other posts about this and couldn't find any so I hope it hasn't been discussed before.Anyone out there wish their Vibe was a six cylinder vs. a 4? I know in my case I am used to the 6 and though I love the vibe, I find that the engine just isn't as strong as I would like it to be. I noticed this on the highway last week when I couldn't squeeze in the left lane fast enough to pass. I knew if I tried, I wouldn't have the power to get up to the left lanes speed quickly enough.Just wondering what everyones thoughts are.

I have the base automatic. Two reasons I got the base:1: My wife won't drive a stick2: You can't get the GT in an automatic. Also the GT requires premium fuel with a octane reading of 93 whereas a base 6 wouldn't require that.

Ok, not sure where I read this, maybe autoweek or caranddriver, but they had an article about GM cars and the Vibe was listed. They are planning a refreshing in 2005 or 2006 I think, but an interesting note is that GM had talked about adding a V-6, problem is that the if they try to do it they will have to wait till the Vibe is redesigned.

OK checked where I found it, look at autoweek.com, then look for article titled FUTURE PRODUCTS: GENERAL MOTORS--CAR COMEBACK IN HIGH GEAR. Further down the article, they look at each division, under Pontiac they talk about the Vibe and what I mentioned above

Remember, this is really a Toyota and the whole drivetrain was designed around a Toy four banger. To install a six would require a pretty serious redesign from engine bay to transmission, etc, etc.Maybe in a few years there will be a more powerful (Torque!!!) 4 out there that would work better without having to rev it to the limit. The only other option would be for GM to take the vibe and redesign it for a GM engine . I'll be this will only occur if vibe sales are and remain exceptionally strong. I'm totally a fan of more power but, realistically speaking, the cost to plop a 6 into the Vibe is probably prohibitive... for the short run at least. I'll bet that's why the supercharger is coming out. No real redesign needed, just bolt on a blower.

How about an LS6? I think Novaresource would agree on this also.....

I think the RAV4 has pretty much the same engine, except a little larger displacement- 2.0 liters. So that could be an easier upgrade path.

That is what the Vibe needs. A 2.2 litre engine that would develop 155 torque but 220 hp... That would really rock. I'd love a 2.0 liter stroker kit. It would use a little more fuel but there would be a little more torque down low. You just got to love the 6200 rpm rush the VVTL-I engine gets.Dreams dreams.....

On the street, torque is king. Sure, 181-hp from 1.8L is impressive however, 130-lb/ft of torque at 6000-rpm is a joke. That "rush" at 6200-rpm doesn't help the Vibe GT beat my old "low-tech" 3.1L, single cam, pushrod, 2 valves per cylinder V6 Sunbird. That 3.1L V6 ran out of breath at about 5000-rpm but 180-lb/ft of torque would walk away from a Vibe GTs from the start on its way to mid 15-sec 1/4-mile times. My opinion is the Vibe needs a V6 option. About 200 to 220 hp would be good but at least 200-lb/ft of torque at a much lower rpm (about 3000 rpm). Here's what I had to say before about this subject:http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id ... 2727#2727A factory supercharger or turbo with intercooler for the L4 would be a good alternative to a V6. Both create torque in engines that lack it. I like superchargers better because they don't have the lag that turbos do but turbos are easier to fit under the hood and easier to add an intercooler to.
