fuse to kill odometer for towing

Post by monkey2 »

On my 2k Saturn, I could pull one fuse & it would kill the odometer and the start circuit.I need to do the same in my 06 Vibe. mostly need to kill the odometer. Killing the start circuit adds level of security .. as the key has to be in the acc position top keep the steering wheel from locking. When I tow, I keep everything locked up so busy fingers can't pull pins when your not looking. Like stopping to buy something or eating.I've had it happen to me but no damage, the safety cables kept things under control. I had just pulled into a parking lot & noticed the car was out of position. I stopped and one of the pins wasn't there. The tow bar has two vertical posts that the cross bar popes over, the pins keep it from raising up & off.Someone did it to a friend, they had stopped for dinner on their way home from Alaska. When the drove up & stopped at the next stop sign. the new F150 truck slammed into the back of the MH the rear of the truck pivoted up against the MH .. totaled the truck and caused $60k damage to the back of their new $200k Monaco 4 slide MH..

I think you want to pull the guage fuse (fuse 11 under the instrument panel) to accomplish this. Toyota stores odometer mileage in the actual guage cluster, so that's where I'm guessing it will help you.On a side note, I presume this is a common practice for vehicles in tow behind a MH, but that's slightly disappointing. Only because while it keeps mileage off the odometer, indicating the engine hasn't been driving the vehicle that far, other things like bearings and lube are mileage sensitive as well. This would allow an odometer to say the vehicle only has 20k miles on it, but in actuality the hub bearings have 50k miles on it. Interesting...hadn't thought about that.

Couldn't you just pull a batt terminal and lock the car with the key in, using the other key to unlock?

Thats true, but the stuff like engine, clutch & transmission are the expensive stuff. are protected. Wheel bearings may be $20 compared to $5000 for the engine. Now low mileage on a car may not be good as it probably only went from home to the store and back home. It never got warmed up. A high mileage indicates highway miles which is much better.Maek sense?

On another forum, the procedure is to insert the key, turn to ON, turn to OFF but don't remove the key .. simple eh? If the engine isn't on the Odometer doesn't work. The keyless didn't work I had to lock by key.
