the IRS really isn't so bad afterall

Post by vibebob »

yep you read that right, I said the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) really isn't that bad.Bob, are you out of your mind ? nope, not at all. let me explain. I filled out my taxes 3 weeks ago and sent it in.I got a letter in the mail from them today ... great I'm being audited ... (opens envelope) .. nope (breathes a sigh of relief) ... I made a mistake on my tax form ... crap now what kinda penality do I have and this the day before due date. It seems I used the wrong column for my tax rate, I used single instead of head of household. They refigured it for me and I'm getting an extra $170.00. Hows that for the bad boys of the US Government, they actually GAVE me more money than I expected.

One minor point of correction - they are allowing you to keep a little bit more of your own hard earned money than you expected. If I steal your Vibe and give you back the shift knob, it is not a gift. (had to make this Vibe related somehow!)

I wish I got a refund this year. Actually, I'd like to break even for once. We owe $1,111.00 this year (used H&R Block Tax Cut). So, when we get our 'rebate' for $1,500 ($1,200 for married couple, $300 for one child), it's going right back into savings to make up for what we owe.

Among other things I do a fair amount of tax work. Just finished my last two a few minutes ago - extensions because they did not have all the needed info. I tell my clients not to blame the IRS - they are just carrying out the laws passed by the Congress YOU elected. If you are angry about something stupid in the tax law - write your Congressman. As a condition of serving on the Ways & Means Committee, I have long proposed that a Congressman be required to spend one tax season working as a tax preparer (perhaps in a H&R Block office). Then they will see up close and personal the havoc our tax law causes, its inconsistencies and complications.

I'm not complaining too much, $1,000 is a lot less than we've owed in the past, and we do have the money in our account.I like not living in a state that has a State income tax anymore. Got burned for that in AZ for four years. (Could never figure out how much to take out during the year).

I filled a month and a half ago. this is the closest i have ever come to breaking even. Ended up with a $83 refund. First refund in a few years. My goal is to be within owing or getting $100. Though I would rather owe a small amount than get a refund. If the IRS can charge intrest on what we owe,Why the devil cant we charge intrest on what they owe us?
