I'm starting this thread to discuss Linux with tribalman without hijacking another thread, but I figure for those unfamiliar with Linux, I would explain a little bit first.Linux is a very versatile free software operating system. I use it as a normal home computer to browse the internet, check email, IM, word processing, photo processing and storage, listening to music, watching movies, keeping track of finances and more.Linux also makes a great server platform. I use an older 1Ghz PC to run as a server 24/7. It runs web, FTP, and mail server software so I can host my own website and email and learn more about how those systems work. I even installed MediaWiki (the software that WikiPedia uses) on it to collaborate and share knowledge with several people. The same PC acts as a host for my home computer to back up to every night. I wrote a script to only backup changed documents and config files, which takes around 10 seconds to run. No excuses not to backup daily! The amount of free software available for Linux is incredible. Many distribution allow you to easily search tens of thousands of programs that can be automatically downloaded and installed at the click of a button.Linux even runs on many devices that no one would ever guess. Tivos, some Linksys routers, some mobile phones including Google's upcoming Android platform all run compact versions of Linux.
yup good stuff, my home pc the only thing i ran into was some sites didnt like FF, trying to get windows apps to run in wine can be a pain and my video card drivers wont install! well...they will but it will take lots of time for me to configure..thats lots of work :/
Wow, I have to say I'm surprised there are more people interested in Unix/Linux. I guess car guys like to tinker with computer stuff too.Quote, originally posted by northvibe »my video card drivers wont install! well...they will but it will take lots of time for me to configure..thats lots of work :/What distribution are you using? If Debian or derivatives (Ubuntu, Mint), there is a program called "Envy" that does all the work automatically. How long have you been using Linux?Quote, originally posted by kevera »Know much about solaris?I have used Solaris, both CLI and the GUI (CDE?), but honestly not enough to say I know much about it.
I tried debian, kubuntu, ubuntu, gento and another one ALL had issues with my video card and my spare one. The only linux install I've done where i could get 3dfx working (beryl) was my powerbook g4. I could still tinker with it but I havent had tons of time lately. right now im running ubuntu and my server is running debian. Ill look into envy, but ati's new drivers were suppose to just work and so are nvidia.

i've played around with linux a few times. i've tried kubuntu, suse, mandriva live disk and knoppix live disk. i like linux but as a mechanical engineering student (can't wait to graduate in May) it hasn't been practical for me to use linux/ teach myself but once i graduate i plan to start using it again. I dont mind XP but can't stand Vista, its such a piece of crap and Office 07 is abismall and counter productive. i'm hoping that Windows 7 will be better/ less of a hog on my amd x2 2.2ghz system
I have experimented with Linux over the past ten years but it was not until I started my current job as Network Administrator that I started using it full time. I use Windows, OS X, and Linux to different degrees and each have their pros and cons. I simply use what is the most appropriate for the given task. At work, I use Linux for the servers and OS X for production work. At home, I use Windows for gaming. I'm from the "can't we all just get along?" camp.
crap envy default didnt work, so ill have to try different versions of the driver . i really think its my motherboard...its like a anti-linux asus +1 to cant all os's get a long I found windows xp runs so much better if you only use freeware/opensource apps. then it doesnt get bloated.

What GPU and bus (AGP/PCIe) are you having trouble with? Did Envy give any error messages?+1 Can't we all get along?I like to share reasons why I like Linux better, but I think it's stupid and rude to push it on anybody. LiveCDs are great for letting people check out Linux without destroying their Windows partition. If they like it great, I'll help them out if they need it. If not, good luck with Windows, I don't keep up with it anymore.

A lot of people believe that it is a useless certification but the truth is a lot of employers still look for people with it. It certainly does not hurt to have too much certification than too little. As for Linux, there are more and more certifications every day but you need to be careful to do your research and find one that is more widely recognized. For a Network Administrator, there are several other certifications that you might want to investigate. The big one for me, that I am just starting to get information on so I can proceed with, is the different Cisco certifications. These tend to be the big ticket items on a resume for a Network Administrator. Net+ is a good precursor to this.Every day I continue to learn and I love it. There are frustrating days too, but I figure they happen for a reason and I just have to learn from it if it was something I did, or just go with it if there was nothing or is nothing I can do about it. If you have any more questions, I'll do what I can to assist. There seem to be a lot of other knowledgeable people here too, and that is great to see.
FWIW Ive been thinking of switching to Linux off and on for about 2 years. I havent heard anything real bad to deter me from the software and the fact that it dosent have the name Microsoft on it is just worth the switch alone. I know a couple people that use Linux in the automotive enviroment and it is working flawlesly for them. Mabye I will take the plunge this year, but I said that last year also.Kinda O.T. but if anyone is in the chicago area and is interested in seeing Linux in an automotive enviroment send me an IM. We have monthly meets and there is always at least one person running linux.Aron

installing linux is getting easier, ubuntu has a new version thats still in beta but it allows you to install it in windows just like any other program and uninstall it if you dont like it. because of this, you dont have to format your drive and loose all of your programs and dataheres a link to an article about ithttp://blogs.zdnet.com/hardwar....e622
Been using Ubuntu since Feisty first came out, upgraded to Gutsy but downgraded to Feisty as it was not ready for prime time back then. They have a new release at the end of the month, something like Hardy Heron..?Anyways I will probably stick with Feisty a while longer before upgrading. I still have Windows but almost never boot into it unless I have to, as in I have a Navigon GPS and their software did not run in Wine correctly so for map updates etc, I boot into windows but for everything else, Ubuntu does the trick.
I was running Kubuntu Fiesty on my PC before I upgraded it, it was schweet. By far, Kubuntu's been my favorite distro, and I've been dorking around in Linux since 1999. I've tried many. I used to be a diehard SuSE fan...I upgraded motherboards and am having a serious video problem with the onboard crappy sis chipset on this new board (can't complain about the board though, it and the processor were free and far better than what I had!) I don't have another video card to use, onboard's all I got. Long story short, apparently several recent flavors of Kubuntu really hate this chipset (Fiesty --> Hardy beta all give me serious screen corruption, lines all over the place, all kinds of garbage) so I had to keep trying distros that would halfway agree with this onboard video.*sigh* I'm back with OpenSUSE until I can get a real video card then it's fricken gone! It tolerates the onboard video, I get a weird blip or a flash every so often but it works. I misses my Kubuntu and it's Debian roots man! 'specially apt-get and such.

I'm running SUSE 10.3 on a spare laptop and it's pretty good. I had some tweaks but all-in-all well worth the price http://www.novell.com/products/opensuse/XP Pro is great, Vista is a POS even on a power machine the Aero desktop craps out. all Vista is is eye candy.
fedora is a pretty good one too, real similar to ubuntu. Ones I like:fedoraArchdebianubuntuthey are all gui'd pretty good and have package management so installing software is just clicks away for the most part.
w00t, back home in Kubuntu! A guy at work gave me a Geforce card and some extra RAM to boot, all for free... I tried getting the nvidia driver to install in OpenSUSE but it kept spitting out this error in sentence fragments in eleventeen different languages. I fixed it by throwing in my Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon CD and hitting reset. Didn't have any problems setting up the driver in Kubuntu, it practically did everything for me. This is the first time I've had functioning 3D on a Linux box, pretty sweet. Now I can use the Euphoria screen saver. (removed)! Ahh, I Linux. My poor Mac, the lil' trooper has gone unused for a few days now. I guess I'll power it up long enough to update my podcasts and sync the nano, that'll make it feel better. lol!

cool. wb. for some reason i've become a linux (removed). right now i have gusty installed on the HDD, i either have the live cd of gusty or hardy heron in the CD drive, i have the CDs for Fedora in my car, and right now i'm downloading a new distro called Mandriva. just released, gonna give it a spin and see how i like that one. i just wish i could get my wireless to work. i can't figure out that ndiswrapper. i don't think heron has support at all for the broadcom 43xx. didn't see it in the program that lists hardware that wants non-open source drivers.

I had mine mounted the other day and was browsing around on the file system but I didn't do anything more than that. First time I had looked at the stuff that gets put on the iPod, interesting the things it does to your music once it gets on there.I never gave much thought of abandoning iTunes and the Mac for syncing, mainly since I have like 3 gigs of junk I've bought out of the iTunes store still in protected format... I figured that would be a pain to deal with so I haven't bothered.

i'm running 64bit kubuntu and would like to install java so i can us the GV chat but cant get it to work. i tried the package on the sun site and tried some java stuff thru the kubuntu repositories but neither worked. i tried restarting my browser in between each try
do you have a java installed at all? on my laptop i am also running ubuntu, but only the 32 bit version. also, do you have all the updates installed both for the system and for firefox? using the downloader i was able to get java 6.0 to work.
i'm trying to get this working for opera browser, i tried firefox and it said there was a plugin needed but it couldn't install it and i only had an option of manual which took me to the java site. i'd rather not use firefox if possible but if i need to for chat i will. i dont like firefox, it doesn't work for me, i can't check my emails thru it and get a bunch of sites that dont work and functionality wise find it much harder to use. i tried konqueror too but it didnt work there eitheryea, i installed it following these instructions for 64bithttp://www.java.com/en/downloa...0.xmlthen i saw these instructions for 32bit and created the symbolic link mentioned at the bottom and restarted opera but still nothing. http://www.java.com/en/downloa...ctingyes, i do have all the updates for kubuntu
which version of kubuntu? cuz im running beta H still and I almost think it came with it or i just installed from repositories...If i cant get something to work I usually have to google:ubuntu+java installfor example, then theres tons of install guides
I've tinkered with Linux for my TiVo hack, and am about to hack my Linksys router. I d/l'd SUSE recently and was shopping around for a craptop to run it on, but car mods took my fun $$ this year I'm looking into a carputer next year or the year after and I plan to run Linux on that.I own my own copy of XP Home and while I was looking at laptops last month, my main plan was to wipe the drive to get rid of Vista and run either Linux or XP. The problem I kept running into was that some laptop manufacturers no longer produce drivers for their hardware for anything other than Vista. This started to make my head hurt, so I modded my car instead lolz.My main rig is for gaming, so I feel that Vista is the epitomy of evil. Why the heck would I want an OS that sucks more resource from my warez than my games do?! I think Vista has been a miserable financial/PR flop and M$ is going to ditch it soon, leaving all the poor Vista users (who are usually simple end-user/consumers) in the lurch. Don't get me started! Can anyone recommend a laptop for no more than $600 that is capable of running something other than Vista? I'm looking for something for my online college courses, so nothing spectacular is really needed. What version of Opera? The current stable version for Linux has some issues with plugins as i have found... I don't think Java worked, and Flash would flat out crash the browser each time anything flash loaded.I installed the beta version of Opera, Java and Flash work fine.Running Kubuntu Gutsy but can't recall what exact version of Opera I'm running. I'll check when I get home.

oh yeah im running beta 3 of FF on my linux box...man i need to stop using beta stuff, it doesnt seem to like my hardware much..ill be fixing that soon with a reinstall of a stable ubuntu. i think flash streaming movies on my box run kinda laggy, like it will be smooth for 5 seconds then skip a bunch then play normal etc. gets annoying.
i'm running version 8.04 Hardy Heron with KDE 3.5.9. the version of Opera is 9.5 beta 1. forgot that its beta so that could be part of the issue, i installed that one because it is the only one available in 64bit and figured it would be more stable than riging the 32bit to run on 64bit. maybe theres a newer beta.did a google seach as north mentioned and that did bring up a bunch of results
I just got the final Opera 9.5 today, threw it on my Kubuntu Gutsy box. Holy crap is it sweet! Seems to be entirely different than the beta I had earlier - the interface is completely different and it seems faster... I swear it has the page loaded before you even click the link, it's that fricken fast. lol! And Flash works, yay. Definitely worth the upgrade.

as i was talking to a friend about open source and why he didn't like it he jokingly said "if it doesn't come from a huge corporation" he doesn't want it, so i came up with this:"You aren't stimulating the economy with your open source, NERD!!"so yes, in this time of economic uncertainty, buy microsoft! XD
I can also post.. that.. if you master Linux and become a master, you can earn $$$$$. I started using linux when it first cam out in the 90s. The distribution was called yggdrassil. You can make a career out of it. Just make sure it's pre-v5 or the GL. Which distro are you going to go with? DD-WRT, OpenWRT, and Tomato are the most popular I think. I installed OpenWRT on my WRT54GL a couple years ago. At the time, the GUI was barely developed and I was really only using it as an AP, so I didn't play with it much. I've recently been having trouble getting a connection from my bedroom, so I've been thinking about cranking up the transit power, but I'm not sure how to do it. I figure first I'll probably upgrade to a much newer distro, and it'll probably be easier. I've recently been seeing more about Tomato, so I think it may be maintained better than at least OpenWRT.Also, really cool, but I'm not entirely sure what I'd use it for: Add an SDcard reader.

w00t, I gots me a new toy to take Linux on the go.It's an Asus eee PC - a fully functional laptop, despite the fact that it's roughly the size of some people's power supplies (only not as thick ) on those 20 pound things with 50" widescreens I see people lugging around that they call "laptops" these days. It's got a 900 MHz Celeron, 4GB solid state drive, 2GB RAM, 7" display at 800x480, SD card slot, wifi... Doesn't sound like much but it's actually really fast. The lack of a mechanical drive and a crapload of RAM helps. They ship with Xandros, which is horrid, so the guy who I bought it from threw a copy of Xubuntu on there. Runs great! Using xfce for the window manager - super fast, although not as flashy as KDE which I prefer but not sure I want to try it on this thing. xfce gets the job done and I still have 50% free on the 4GB ssd. You can also throw in a SD card and run an OS off of that, I may see what I can squeeze onto the 2GB card I just bought for it.This lil' thing is pretty cool... It joins my dated but still cool Zaurus PDA so now I have a collection of devices that let me dork around in Linux away from the desk.
