Bought a new car about 7 weeks ago. Temp tags from the dealer were about to expire so I call the dealership and ask what's up. They tell me the bank that is financing me needs a copy of my social securty card to finish up the paper work before they could order the plates. I provided the dealership with that information and they gave me new temp tags. Well my 2nd set of temp tags are about to expire and my plates are still not in. Any ideas on what I can do or should do?Thanks

What dealer? I live in the DFW metroplex. It should not take more than a week or so to get your plates. The dealer is jacking off at your expense.

Take any paperwork you got from the dealer to your local DMV office and ask them to look into it.

I left the lot with both my wifes car and my truck with permanant tags right then and there. Maryland allows dealers to register autos online when the purchase is made.

Keep on the dealership. Make them give you more temporary tags until you get your plate. Don't take any chances. I had to get another temporary tag from my dealership but it was because I had ordered a special plate.

Don Herring Mitsubishi in Plano, Tx. I've been calling them every day and still no plates. When I bought my Vibe it only took maybe 2 weeks at the most. This is really pissing me off.

the big problem is each state/province thinks theirs is the best way.just this year you can now renew your plates online in indiana and it sure makes it easy, no more standing in long lines with the pimply faced 16 year olds getting their temps. LOL online is the way to go!

We can also renew our plates online here in Ontario or at the mall in the little automated booth.

We can't renew online, because we need to put the little sticker on the plate, but we don't have to cough up the cash all at once. I pay for my registration/plates monthly, and they automatically withdraw it from my account. I do need to go to the "store" to pick up the renewal stickers, and get a paper registration that says I'm up to date.For a driver's licence, you can do that entirely by snail-mail, or in person. The lines aren't that terribly long, but one issuer I went to had an incompetent employee, and it took 45 minutes of standing in line, phoning head office, phoning head office, phoning head office, printing and waiting.

You may not have the plates because the dealer hasn't got the deal totally done with a bank. I would call the bank and get them on the case, since the dealer hasn't been a help.

$1000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for plates on a car??????? where is this at that you live?? my plates on my vibe were only $300 and it gets cheaper the older the vehicle. Do you get a payment book?

Now that I've got everybody freaked out, let me explain how it works when the government is the only insurance game in town. They call themselves Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI).Our (mandatory) insurance is tied to our plates. So, that $1000 (approx) includes $58 for registration (the plate itself) ... the rest is insurance. This gets you a $750 deductible, and $200000 liability.Additionally I have a second insurance policy (you can shop around for these, but mine happens to be through SGI Canada, their "supplementary" insurance division), which runs me about $170 a year, gets me a $250 deductible, except on glass, which is $50 ... includes free stone chip repairs.

I attempted to post a reply yesterday, but right after I finished typing, my internet connection crashed, and I was too lazy to walk across the building to reset the server.Compared to the rest of Canada, our insurance & registration rates are pretty cheap (that's what I'm told, at least). The major difference is that your mandatory insurance is based on the car you drive, not your driving record (however if your record is clean, you get a discount off the plate price, but that only happened 1 year ago). The price for your driver's licence does go up if you get tickets & stuff.Let's say you're a multiple car, 2+ driver household. It would be most advantageous to register the car in the name of whoever has the best discount rate, even if they seldom/never drive that car.

thats quite a system they have in canada. kinda makes sense in a big brother sort of way. LOL then again it is cheaper than what i payie: $1200 per year insurance + 300 licence ( hmmm maybe I should move, well only 4 years left with General Motors ) sorry I jumped to a conclusion......

Hey, no problem... it's not until you talk to others do you find out how it works in other places. But our system is very Big Brother ... I might be able to find cheaper insurance else where, but no other company is allowed in the game. Similarily, the crown corporations (provincial gov't owned companies) also control the local telephone, and most of the electricity & natural gas (to about 90% of the residents). They just de-regulated long distance & cellular telephone in the last few years, so you do have options there (although the crowns still have the best rates & coverage, IMHO).So, I don't even remember who started this thread .... have ya got your plates yet????
