2009 Vibe with Camry Parts?

Post by Theodoreable »

I understand that the 2.4 engine in the Camry is the same 2.4 engine that’s in the 2009 Vibe. Would anyone know if the Camry five speed transmission is the same five speed transmission that’s in the 2009 Vibe as well? Thanks!

The 2.4L in th Camry is the same as the 2.4L in the Vibe. Some parts maybe different, because of the way the engine bays are configured, but the block and heads are the same.Intake and exhaust manifolds, intake piping, and that kinda stuff might be different.

Small world indeed!I'll have to get another local meet together at some point maybe this spring or fall. Last one I had at allaire state park had a nice turnout. Now that I know there are more locals (well, 1 at least), might give it a shot again.Back OT. Unfortunately, my extensive googling of your inquiry has yet to give me a solid answer. If I get any definitive info, I'll pass it on.

My sources indicate the 09 Vibe uses the GM Getrag F23/5 transmission -- the same 5 speed manual used in the Cobalt and G5.

Ragingfish, Does this mean the Matrix has a GM tranny also? I am surprised that the GM tranny gets used, as I thought the join venture agreement with Toyota was that Toyota underpinnings had to be used in both. Oh well, thank you very much for your efforts!

Oh well, thank you very much for your efforts!I do not have any information that leads me to believe the Matrix has any GM mechanicals. FWIW, the 'trix is built at the Toronto, ON plant, which could result in both models having different powertrain components based on what is supplied to each plant. I'd be more intrigued as to whether the new Corolla has this alleged Getrag or if all of my info is bupkis. I did attempt to lookup and see if either the Corolla or Matrix used this same Getrag tranny, but I can't find any manufacturer information for that component that would tell me for sure if it's Toyota or not in either model. Seems when it comes to Toyota cars, people don't discuss products by name as much as GM fans do. lol.I'm not 100% confident the Vibe has that Getrag F23 -- the GM media site does not show transmission sourcing for 09 models, so I can't say I got that info from THE source. Unfortunately, my googling has led me to only a handful of sites which identify it as a Getrag F23/5, one of which is automobile.com. Similarly, though, at least one site - cheersandgears - claims a Toyota 5-speed. HOWEVER, C&G does not specify a model YEAR on their data, so they could be referring to the previous MY vibes. No sites i can find seem to identify the 'trix by manufacturer or any other identifying specs. So yeah, I guess all I can say is don't take any of my information as gospel until I can do more definitive fact-finding...

I remember hearing something about the engine (and I assume tranny) being outsourced or something for toyota on the XB which also has that engine, But I cant rember where I saw it, I think it was some buying guide, but it was one of the things that scared me away from that vehicle (other than how the American designers slayed the design of the original xb and ruined it)

I just remembered that my window sticker on my 2009 indicated that both the transmission and the engine were made in Japan.

I'm not sure why I want to know so much, but I do. Would having a Camry tranny make me happy? My existential question of the evening.

I think I may have answered my own question. I called Toyota this morning and spoke with a product specialist. The Toyota product specialist stated that the engine and transmission in the Matrix are both Camry based. I guess it would be very safe to assume that this would be true for the Vibe.
