It's my turn for bad news

Post by nygiantzz1 »

It seems many of us having a bad week, now it's my turn. My wife stopped for gas on the way to work this morning and then broke down(stalled out) about 1 mile later in her 2007 G5. The car was towed to the dealer and they put her in a Cobalt to get to work. We got very bad news a few hours later. The gas she purchased was contaminated. The fuel pump is shot, the lines and tank need to be cleaned and then we'll find out if it did anything else to the engine or other things. None of it is covered under warranty. Our insurance will pay all but the $500.00 deductible. The dealer has a sample of the gas and I have contacted the Dept. of Agriculture and Markets who are going to the dealer tomorrow to get the sample. They will then test the gas stations tanks. I contacted the gas station and he claims that his gas is fine. I sent a friend to the station with a gas can to buy 1 gallon for testing. He was told the pumps were broken. If the gas is fine, why did he stop selling it? Since he won't admit fault, my insurance company will take him to court if Ag and Mkts. finds bad gas in his storage tanks. This is going to be a real pain to deal with. I've done business with this place for years and I'm really surprised he won't admit he could be at fault. I'm pretty sure his tanks are full of storm run off. We had heavy rain here for the last couple days and his parking lot was under a foot of water yesterday. To summarize....this sucks!

She bought the gas at Shan Petroleum on Hamburg St. It's the old Getty station near the Quality Inn and Joe's Pizza. I bought gas there on Monday for the Vibe and have not had any problems. I'm pretty sure his storage tank is cracked and water from the storm got in there last night. Everything on that side of the street was flooded yesterday.

damn that doesn't sound fun at all. will you get the deductible back if the insurance wins the case against the station?? hopefully they won't raise your insurance rates because of this...good luck

I still have to pay it up front to get the car back from the dealer.

Well that sucks. If you can get a sample of his fuel before he pumps out his tanks or even put a note in the daily paper looking for anyone who fueled up there and now have broken cars. His insurance should be paying, not yours.

The Dept. of Agriculture and Markets just contacted me. They obtained a sample and then pumped 350 gallons of water out of the stations holding tank. This is good news for 2 reasons, 1. It's now obvious that his insurance has to cover our repairs and 2. If it was only water in the lines, a good cleaning and some fresh gas should fix the car.

Update: The car is now fixed and running great. The fuel pump was OK but the injectors and spark plugs had to be replaced. I didn't see the bill yet because the gas station's insurance is paying it, but it looks like around $1,800.00 for parts, labor, rental car and hazardous waste disposal fees for the bad gas. I'm just glad this mess is finally over.

Whew...glad it worked out ok...that's a tough thing to prove, but it looks like Dept of Weights and Measures did a good job following through.EDIT: My bad, I guess it's Agriculture and Measures in your neck of the woods. Its DWM here in AZ...
