Drive axle question....

Post by Retroactive »

How much rotational play should be in your drive axle?I just got a 2007 vibe, just jacken around a took the front tires off and started feeling around a bit.I noticed I had about a total of a half an inch rotational play in the drive axle. Is that normal? In retrospec I notice a slight delay in acceleration when I hit the gas, and it jolts forward. Could this be because of it?I'm sure I'm being a little obsessive, but I just don't want to fark up my baby...THANKS GENVIBE!

I had my axles out a month or so ago when I upgraded my tranny.I did notice the slack you were taking about, but it seems normal compared to other vehicles I've done.Usually they clunk or make a sound,so I would say your hesitation is something else.

I agree that the slight amount of play sounds normal. Note that your '07 Vibe is 'Drive By Wire' (DBW) where pressing on the gas pedal sends a signal to the engine contoller rather than opening the throttle directly (presumably this allows for better emissions reduction). I expect that the slight hesitation is due to this rather than the free play in the axle.

That amount of play is normal.

Drive-by-wire delays are not that significant. There were some early hitches in response, but they are much better now. Can you run as fast as an electrical impulse? Can your car? Nope...even with processing, it's not much delay time.I believe your delay and surge is more likely a transmission problem than a drive axle problem. Have you checked your transmission fluid lately? How many miles are you at and have you ever changed it?

Can you run as fast as an electrical impulse? Can your car? Nope...even with processing, it's not much delay time.I do notice a very slight delay in response on both of our '06 Vibes with DBW. And I agree that the delay associated with either the electrical signal transmission or the processing is insignificant. But the main impetus for switching to DBW was for better control of emissions. Abrupt changes in the engine operation are associated with bursts of higher emissions. Therefore I wouldn't be surprised if there is a deliberate short rampup in the control response rather than making an abrupt change the instant the gas pedal is pressed.
