Front door speaker issue (Infinity referance). . . tell me if this is familiar

Post by dirtydee000thedi »

Hello there everyone, this is my SECOND post, as I just purchased a 2004 with some after market audio parts (and a bit of a shoddy install IMO) but I plan to fix all that. The first thing I did when I got the car home was pop open the door panels to find out what kind of speakers were installed in the door. I was pleasantly surprised to find Infinity's in there, BUT they seemed to be in not so great condition. Once the whole door panel was off, it was obvious what had happened, over the years, the woofer speakers have vibrated and pushed against the door panels, more specifically the criss-cross "beams" that are on the back of the stock speaker grill on the door. This has caused some tears in the surround of the woofers and also indentions in some parts. Well, it was easy to fix without cutting out the factory grill, but I am wondering if anyone has experienced this. I would write up a mini how to on removal of the "beams" as they easily can be removed with only a sharp blade and a little hand work. Lemme know!

Hi and Welcome to your new second home... As far as the problem with the speaker, you might fix them "ok" but you should really consider getting something new.... as they move very fast (as you prolly know) it becomes very difficult to "patch" the problems... and can easily re-occour.. Personally, i'm not a fan of Infinity at all.... I spend much time in audio forums and Infinities are sited as having some of the worst "mid-bass" in the market, along with a rather harsh tweeter... again, just my opinion based on both owning them and reading a LOT... If you were to replace them down the road, a little suggeation would be the Polk Db line and/or the Alpine S line, which both are much more highly regarded from an overall stand point... It's nice to have someone here not scared to get a car and start tearing into it... (not saying other AREN't, but you get the point)Cheers..

Thats strange, What kind of adapter was used for the speakers? Most people on the fourm are using the modified stock plate the the original speaker came attached to. I had to make my own adapters because my midbass are fairly big, My adapters are 1.25" deep ande my aftermarkets would hit with the panel on so I had to do some grinding also.Aron
Vibe is gone and will be missed as I've gone country style

Thank you Sublime!I am no stranger to tearing into a car, my Miata was well adjusted the way I like Frankly, you are right about the Infinity's. Almost anything is better than stock, but the midbass IS lacking. I will need to replace them and check into the Polks, I have always thought they produced a natural and musical sound compared to others. Although I am a bit sad that the (amazing!) cadence component set would not fit due to being too deep. I LOVED those speakers in my miata. Loved. AUDIOVIBE; the adapter looks like an aftermarket one. It is black instead of the (from what I have seen) white standoff used with the stock speakers. Whatever it is, it pushes the speakers out too far and was jamming them into the door. Maybe people aught to just look out when using aftermarket speaker adapters. I suppose I will post the pics and process for anyone interested. It would at least be a good heads up for anyone putting $$$ into the door and not wanting them to be trashed after a while.

I put Infinity Kappa Perfects into my car. The aluminum cones have great mid-bass and fill in exactly where my 12" RF HE's drop off. I cut out the speaker grills and used a heat gun to flatten the rounded bottom edge of the door. The panel is packed with Dynamat Extreme. The speakers were mounted in the door panels due to the deep baskets. The hole in the panel was cut just big enough for the back of the basket to pass through. This left plastic for the speaker to clamp on to with the metal ring that came with the set. The speaker was set in the front grille (mesh removed) and placed in the cutout, then 4 holes were made through which 4 bolts attach to the metal ring behind. Plastic covers the original speaker holes to block rainwater from the window.
