I've got a 2003 vibe gt that I've had since 2003 and the engine hood cable snapped a few weeks ago. Normally I wouldn't worry about it that much but my oil light flicked on this morning and I want to be sure everything is ok.Has anyone replaced one of these engine hood cables before? I'm pretty sure that I can just put the car up on a jack and find the cable under the drivers side somewhere to release it manually. But then again, that could be my lack of experience in auto maintenance coming out.

Much depends on "where" it broke... If it was inside, no prolem, get some vice grips and pull it.. if it was near the latch (more likely) then you might have fun getting it released... Replacing it shouldn't be difficult..
Just had a bit of time during the 5th end break of the Scotties Tournament of Hearts (yeah, I'm a Cannuck!!) to check the cable. Seems it's still attached to both ends so I got my needle nose pliers out and pulled the cable from behind the plastic latch and it popped the hood open. It would seem that the cable is either "stretched" a bit or the engine hood latch at the front of the car is sticky. This is good 'cause it means I can still get into the engine but it's also bad because it's a pain in the (removed) to close properly .Quick question on the side (that really should be posted in another area, but hopefully will be a quick response)... is there a way to check the CEL codes from home without a scanner? I remember you used to be able to do a dance with the ignition to get a combination of flashes from the lights on the console to determine what the CEL was about. Thanks for the help!!

Many auto parts stores will scan you for free now a day..
