Okay so I'm ready for a new car, my sister wants to buy my vibe, so I'm kinda getting giddy to get a new car. Im set on more of a sporty car, I live once, I want a sports car before I settle down with kids and some sort of girlfriend/wife, Im still single so I have some money Im kind of set on a 2007 cobalt ss supercharged, but ive been looking at the mazdaspeed 3/6, volvo c30, hhr ss, ford focus svt and i peaked at the subie wrx.The 2007 balt has higher reliability than the prior ones, my best friend has one and i love the thing. Its cheap, its fast, has tons of mods, handles well and still and american car. The only problems people seem to have is a weak clutch, no biggie thats why they make sport ones I mean we took his on some rally's and kept up with evo's and sti's no problem this thing is a underrated beast.mazdaspeed 3 would be nice for space but still a little more expensive than the cobalt. I hear they are ok to mod, not bad on speed but lower mpg :/ the speed 6 is still sorta pricey but awd c30...yeah not liking the hatch, you open it and the floor is 6 inches lower than the door so you cant slide things in :/ this is like a old man's car that only tows golf clubs.hhr ss was pretty cool, sat sorta high like the vibe, turbo but this will be above the budget :/ford focus svt - dang these always got great ratings on handling for a NA car, i cant find a low mileage one though. I like that its a hatch but yeah...cant find one :./subie's - so far just seems to expensive for the mileage on them. awd would be great but lower mileage. I've always liked them but remember people talking about the wrx's tranny was super weak and 2nd gear would blow out, not sure if that was only certain years though? sti is to much money Sooo any other cars? OK NO honda's including acura. Has to be awd or fwd, sporty and kinda fast. Im really leaning to the cobalt though, just need to find one with the lsd
2.5L on subies is extremely strong (MT). the AT is where we have issues. yes, if you want a "sports" or sporty car you will have to sacrifice something, usually mpg. AWD is very nice and well, I will never go back to anything other than AWD/4WD from this point on. Car will handle well no matter what surface or weather. Out of those cars you posted, I will say the Speed3 is imo, the best quality of car for what you pay. Though it's not AWD, it's a great car. Don't even bother with teh Speed6. It SUCKS! super slow and sluggish, not impressive what so ever, even if AWD. When we took it out for a test drive, I was so disappointed, I couldn't wait to get back into my LGT. as for the cobalt SS/Saturn ion Redline Supercharged... also, not impressed. They were worse (performance wise) let down the the Speed6.Really, if you don't need the awd, go with the Speed3. you still have the function and capability of the hatch, and the fun/fast factor. it's a great car, lots of fun. If I didn't need AWD, there'd be one sitting in the garage already. but I do need AWD, so therefore, the STI hatch for me. also, the new WRX hatch, though decent in performance, lacks the extra oomph that previous years possessed. In fact, you might be able to get a really good deal on an 07 right now.
That's a tough one.You like me,use your vehicle for work,so reliability and mileage are a big factor in your decision.I was looking at the wrx and the sp3,I haven't bought one yet because I'm worried about reliability. My trusty sunfire GT has not once given me any problems,so as a fun vehicle for work I would have to say the cobalt, because your buddies have them and if they work for them alright,I would go that route.

I like the MS3 but its 4 grand more than the cobalt ss! thats nuts...Im gonna keep looking today at some other cars, 2005+ malibu (my mom has one with the 3.5l v6), maybe the merc milan. But man...I want a sports car before I settle down and have to only get minivan's and wagons I do like the subies but I only need awd for like 3 months of the year, but Im gonna keep looking out for a wrx. I need to call my insruance today and get more quotes on different cars...mmmm If it all works out to my perfectness, i may be checking out a local cobalt in burnt orange with the complete package i want for 17k.
the WRX with manual transmission only developed issues with stripping the gears when driven incorrectly or to much power was forced through it. If you plan on keeping it stock and don't see yourself clutch dumping every light or drag racing then you'll be just fine. There is a lot of stock manual transmission WRX out there without any tranny problems. But yes they are known to shatter like glass when taken out of their power handling range.I'd sooner take a Speed 3 over a Speed 6. I was greatly disappointed in the speed 6 I test drove but the Speed 3 was a lot more fun. Plus it looked good too.If your deciding between a colbalt and an Ion Redline... chose the colbalt. It looks better, makes good power with a couple mods and IMO looks great with a body kit. A much more aggressive looking car.I'd never buy a ford.
2007 stage 2 Satin White Pearl Subaru STi 2008 stage 2 Subaru STi hatch See my car at: Mavrik's car page
well the car would stay stock for....a little while. The nice thing about the cobalt is the stage kits and gmpp parts keep it under warranty. I only found 1 speed6 at my price so yeah...prolly would rather have a speed3 but they are still a couple grand more than i want to spend. the redline ive looked at but yeah since it has 4 doors the body is weaker so the car is heavier and id rather have the cobalt. I gotta run to cloquet but ill look at wrxs when i get there.
Sounds like your dead set on a SS... Not a bad car, I never see many of them round here and it's the land OF chevy/ford... I cannot comment on reliability of the SS whatsoever, so I got nothing for ya... I CAN tell you in the 8yrs of owning my 99' Subaru RS that I had NOTHING major happen to me in terms of maintenance... I replaced the rear wheels bearings (old style) at 85 and 105kmi... the clutch soon after, the timing belts and timing belt drivetrain at like 100k (shoulda been changed at 85k) and the struts at like 100k... all wear items (I didn't mention things like brakes, that's a no-brainer)
I guess the main concern is cost and the SS is cheaper than all the others with lower miles too. All my cars had nothing major go wrong ever when I drove them. The ecotec engine is a great engine its just the little extra parts that seem to break, but the 07's seem pretty stable. Id like to stay "american made" as i like to support the union workers...aahhhh im just scared to part with the vibe because i know it works
*cough* HONDA HATER *cough*Jus a opinion... SI's have LSD decent power, 6spd, handle pretty good, lots of potential, and decent mileage. But since your a hater... id test drive them first to give yourself an idea of power/handling and confortability the listed cars have for you.i drove the Balt... love the SC but a 5 speed??? comeon, it does look nice though and interior is nice.my buddy got a wrx tr... BASE turbo wrx for only 23K (in cali) and couple mods and it hauls!hhr.... HA! id laught at you.. sorry! there ugly!Speed3 is a good choice but expensiveyou could get a used 350/g35 for pretty cheap now. jsut find one not abused then traded.

The SC balt would romp a Si anyway so id get a ss over a si.I found a speed 3 for under 20k, but has 20 some k miles on it so...little leery. I live in MN, rwd isnt a option there cali boy I may go look at a celica gts, couldnt find a vibe gt. This is like my early life crisis and FI is the only cure..I need more FI!
ya, i'm gonna stick my neck out there and just say... no on the SS. sorry, but for the money, spend a little more to get a better car. just mho. then again, i don't view the SS as a sports car, just like i wouldn't say my LGT in all it's glory is a sports car. also, insurance on a rex is spendy. which is why a lot of people go with the LGT.. more power, family sedan size and super cheap insurance. god only knows what my insurance will be when I pick up the STI in 3 mos. ouch. one at fault accident and 2 tickets 2 yrs ago... gonna suck.
JUST GO BUY A BEEMER! hahaI didnt know your area had SIs as a hot ticket... on 8thgen we dont really hear TOO much bout stolen SIs.The Si you can get used pretty cheap too... and insurance isnt that bad if you get the SI-danWat bout a turbo'd soccer mom van? youll be ready for when you settle down and youll have that FI you want.

with a car payment and my vacationing i wont be able to FI anything aftermarket. I can get a cobalt with 10k miles on it for 17k. Thats fully loaded with the LSD and all. put a stage 2 on there and this sucker is racing v8's. All the other cars are 20k or more..which id rather not spend. If it gets to crazy ill prolly end up with a kia or ford escort zx2, pay off all my loans then be wanting a fast car again all with in 2 months . I may look at a tC or G6 but they are heavy and wont be up to the speed and handling i want. The srt4 is a neon and over priced. mmm I mean the SS SC is the cheapest fastest modable car for the money hands down. I cant find anything else in my price range with specs like it :/
get a honda fit with a turbo.. youd hit like 90 in 3 seconds!

those fit's rims were getting stolen off dealership lots here...see my reasoning for not owning a honda, those ricers will steal everything off of it and the car too.I just checked tC's out, wow they are expensive for the mileage, 15k for a car under 20k miles. I will try to go test drive one this week but i think they'll be sorta slow the SC isnt a option with that, its like 3 grand more!
+1 to what AKLGT said. The cobalts aren't a bad looking car, and they've got some pep, but I'd rank it in the line of the old Berettas and Cavaliers. They're just not a 'sports' car. Out of your list, I'd go with the Mazda, but if you're set on a sports car, why not get a lease buy-back or something a few years older and go with an audi, bmw, etc?
again...i live in MN i cannot have a RWD car. the supercharged cobalt is highly underrated by people, this thing hauls. keeps up with those v8 camero's and mustangs. The race SS SC's were so fast for its class they had to detune the car because it was winning to much, so they put the stock exhaust system back on. Ive been looking and seriously, everything is either NA and just as much as the cobalt ss or its over 20k which i dont want to spend. the only ms3 i found under 20k has upper 20k miles :/ If you guys have good suggestions keep them coming, under 20k dollars for sure and under 20k miles is what im looking for.
If you get the supercharged Cobalt or the Ion Redline, you could get the stage 3 kit and get 300hp. Or just get a used Ion Redline. My friend bought one last year for waaay under 20k. I think about 13k or 14k with about 35k miles.
get a used audi A4.. there pretty nice and clean... not sure on price/yr. but its another option

Kev - for sure man, im kinda set but just wanted to see what else is out there and get some opinions on other cars. The redlines body is weaker than the cobalt because of the 4 doors (2 rear mini suicide doors) so if i took it on rally's it would have some massive body roll that and its heavy for a car. I did look at them online and they cost a tiny bit more than the cobalt for the mileage they have on them :/ odd but the 2 back doors do make the rear seats amazingly easier to get into!k ill check the A4's and celicas.... but theres no feeling like FI compared to NA
no gt-s's of course with low miles and A4's are crazy expensive. hmmm looks like I go test drive a tC, the cobalt ss sc i was looking at. I better brush up on the manual shifting
you're obviously dead set on a ss sc cobalt. just go do it then. why mess around if you already know what you want unless you just want to go test drive cars.
i test drove the SI coupe/sedan prolly 8 times total before i bought mine... so my mind was made up before getting mine. haha.and yeah your a chevy boy so go get it... lame! ; )*I see like 5 runnin around town... they are sexy, just heard they were reliable. and a freggin 5speed for a supercharged car.

news and rumors.... subie/toyota celica in the works soon??? i may have to check it out if they do offer one w/ STI awd goodness in a 2 door coupe for autox!
Quote, originally posted by AKLGT »you're obviously dead set on a ss sc cobalt. just go do it then. why mess around if you already know what you want unless you just want to go test drive cars. hahah test driving can be fun I looked at some tibby's but they are like the other NA fwd coupes, almost the same price and high miles. I talked to my bank today and they can get me a wicked low interest loan, so im pretty pumped. rizzle - um fyi im a ford guy not chevy but ford doesnt have the focus st here I did look at a c30, but like i said the floor was 6 inches lower than the hatch so it would suck putting things in it. Not sure if i can get my sister to visit genvibe much but if I do get a new car ill stick around! i love this site!! Ill have to part my car too as my sister doesnt like all the mods hahha, "its too low".
Sounds like you already have your mind made up...but here is my 2 cents anyway.06 or newer Nissan 350Z base model manual trans. This is by far the most car for the buck hands down. It handles great, rides nice, great brakes and 300+ hp. I enjoy every minute of driving while in this car. You do not need to modify it to have a great car. Although there is plenty of aftermarket products for it.It will last longer than most other sports cars and has good resale. As for the winter roads in MN, no capable sports car is going to handle it very well.
Base Two Tone Satellite, Auto, & Pwr Pkg....my current commuting car.

Good luck on you car search.I thought those cobalt ss were pretty sweet that came to the meet at the park.Looks like a well put together production car.Your friend seems to like it and having good luck with it so far.Take your time you'll find something that really grabs you by the *%!@s and doesn't break the budget too!Howard
hey north, if you're a ford guy, then the 3 or 6 would be right down your alley. that's what the euro focus and i think mondeo basically are. and why not just a 3?it'll save you a few grand over the speed3... just my 2 yengood luck on the searchand hope, where'd you hear about the subie/toyota deal?
de-badged o4 vibe
tein s-techs | 17" msr 105 wheels | 235 45 17 nexen n7000
weapon-r short ram (thanx BC!) | typeR sport pedals | LED 3rd brake
o2 triumph speed four
If i get a plain car i would just stay with the vibe. Im looking to get a sporty/sports car. the speed3/6 is cheaper than all the others to insure ahhaha. I like the MS3 a lot, I just want to go test drive one and see the modability, they are just a little more than what i want to spend. the subaru's are the most expensive to insure even the RS was crazy, 15 bucks less a month than the cobalt. I did sit in a MS3 last weekend and it was real nice, back seat was only a little smaller than the vibe for leg room. I wanna see how it runs though

my kid has a Speed 3 SP and man that thing is FAST !! he dropped it and installed an cold air induction has heated leather seats .... the one downer is it takes PREMIUM fuel to get the performance and at $3.29 vs $2.89 regular it hurts at the pumpI've heard good things about the Cobalt and not so good about the HHR (slow and blind spot)how about a Pontiac Solstice or the Saturn version ?how about a VW GTI .. super fast

well I just test drove the cobalt with all the options i want, had a quick chat and had him under 20k so haha I may be able to push down a little more on the price and ill be good to go. Man the thing picks up a little faster than the vibe I looked again at the MS3's but a little more than I wanted to spend, was looking at WRX's used but they need more of my time to get looked over before buying than i have and they do cost a little more. soooo time to talk to the pop's and sis to see what/when she'll buy that sucker from me hahah.
OHHH SNAPS!!! If all goes well with the bank I'll be getting my car Monday or Tuesday!!!! (removed)!!! so excited. Cosmic Blue mica MS3 GT. Only option I didnt get was navigation. Got it even below invoice so pretty darn good deal! So now for a vibe part feeler....

I really think you'll be happier with that decision. Still have the use of space (not as much) as teh Vibe w/ the hatch, you get decent fuel economy and well, a turbo. not to mention, the stock suspension and power in the MS3 is not quite as good as the STI, but much better than my LGT stock. I'd put it close to the handling I have with my LGT on coilovers, but not as much power. We (both Mavrik and I) really enjoyed driving that car for the 36 mile test drive up and down a little hill in WA. LOL. If I really didn't require AWD, I'd have bought one last year!

I should of used my last paycheck to pay my student loan instead of the 1st/2nd one..blah i hope they still have the car by then.I have driven it twice and it has some nice power, feels cool when the turbo kicks in. Just wish it had a boost gauge like the SS, it was cool to see that thing bounce when you hit the pedal.
