Just found this - sorry if it's already on the board somewhere else... http://autoweek.com/cat_content.mv?port ... e=03017790 It's half way down the page next to the second "BLOWERS" heading. Doesn't say about torque, but 172 is awful close to 180. I hope someone does a story with a head-2-head race between a GT and a blown base soon... The anticipation is killing me.

Does anyone from our board know anyone that went? I would love to get the rest of the story on the TRD exhibit. Also, it seems fishy that vibe supercharger only gets 32 hp, while the others, Jackson Racing, Vortech, and GM all get around 60 for similar size motors. What gives?

It doesn't surprise me. They would lose sales of the GT if the base Vibe with supercharger was a faster, sportier car.We can hope that since there have been rumors of closer to 200hp with the supercharger, some smart person will figure out how to modify either the ECU or supercharger itself to get it back to those numbers.KSNeptune
that was 200 flywheel power 172 to the wheels most people fail to realize that a gt has only about 165 hp to the wheels plain and simple the supercharger has more power period .and way more torque. you can argue the six speed all you want. but really its no contest. and like i said before the base is the more profitable car because of quantity. if every vibe was a gt and for 17000 they still wouldnt sell great most people want automatics, some want awd, hell i bet they sell more awds than gt's

If 140 is flywheel HP, then 172 must also be flywheel power also.

quote:BLOWERS Toyota Racing Development showed off its supercharger for the Toyota Matrix XR and Pontiac Vibe. Based on the ever-popular Eaton roots-type blower, this one increases horsepower by 23 percent, from 140 to 172 with 7.5 pounds of boost. TRD added an extra fuel injector upstream of the supercharger that also cools the charge by 15 degrees. It’ll also fit on Corollas with the 1ZZFE engine and on the Celica, but you can’t close the hood. Hmm, that sounds like a very odd thing for an OEM company to have done...sticking an extra fuel injector upstream of the supercharger. I guess they just wanted to make extra sure that it won't run lean and blow up.
I read somewhere (although I don't remember where) that production of the XRS/GT/Celica engine was maxed out right now and that Toyota didn't think there was sufficient demand to build another factory to produce them. This is the reason that an automatic was never offered in the GT and the reason that the XRS will no longer be offered (as of the 2004 model year) with the auto. They might even have plans to make the supercharged engine standard equipment in the XRS/GT to allow for increased Celica (as well as XRS/GT) production.

YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!
I think the more likely scenario is an aftermarket company coming out with a hood that somehow creates the necessary clearance. Say a dummy scoop or something. In my opinion though, it would look better just to run with the hood off than put the dummy scoops and goofy looking stuff on.
the info on our front page say 35% increase as does everthing else I'VE read.

where does 140 to 172hp come from?..our cars start at 130hp ...and that at the crank..Has anyone dynoed horse power to the the wheels ...because I forgot to ,before I turboed...so ther is no way for me to dyno to the crank....to see axact gaines.my guess would be that at stock we would be 110-to115 at the wheells to start....Is that about right?

One of the hottest aftermarket offerings for the '60s era muscle cars was a replacement hood with a bump right where the bulge of the oversized Hemi V8 was. And it never looked odd unless the owner didn't actually have an engine in there that needed the room. Of course it was easy to tell once the flagged was dropped for an impromptu drag race.So I'll bet someone DOES come up with a bulging hood for the corolla that has a Vibe supercharger in it. And I'll bet it'll be the envy of every other corolla owner. KSNeptune
quote:the info on our front page say 35% increase as does everthing else I'VE read. The info on our front page and "everything else you read" NEVER says anything about an increase in MAX horsepower. Many aftermarket companies quote power increase at the point where power increase is maximized, not the point where power is maximized, get it? Also that is old news compared to the link I posted, which presumably contains information that TRD released at SEMA Import on May 23rd. And as far as the base being faster than the GT - I will keep an open mind till I see an unbiased, fair test (and I know that it is very possible). Opinions and rumors, completely unsupported by any data, are barely even worth the time it takes me to scroll past them... I know it's difficult, but can we try not to turn this into ANOTHER Base vs GT thread? I'll take part of the blame, since I brought up the comparison test, but I really just wanted some numbers or insights...

Do you have any links? (I changed my mind on the rumors - so sue me...)BTW - I bet the MR2 spyder boards have lit up with this news. With the 6sp sequential and 2200lb curb, that car would probably be a lot of fun with another 30 horses. I wonder if the supercharger would fit under that hood.

Thanks for the link - I've been looking for a cheaper alternative to a G-tech pro for a while now. Nice times too, I just assumed you had some mods. Any idea how accurate that Mr. Dyno is - I mean, have you run at a dragstrip yet? I'm also wondering how easy it was to set up. I see that it has a dual axis accelerometer, but doesn't make any mention of being able to record lateral acceleration. I'm guessing that the second axis is vertical so that they can correct for tilt. I thought G-tech offered a way to measure lateral accelerations.

i guess its as accurate as any accellerometer based device can be. but it has a lot of correction factors that supposed to make it more accurate than others. such as weather, vehicle tilt, vehicle power loss corrections using these require a bit more complicated setup. it also can record cornering ,acceleration, decceleration g-forces and accell runs(up to fifty) with p.c software for computer download . it also runs on batteries or cord if you dont want to input all that data you can run on a track and input your time as a baseline for future refernce without affecting the corrections. if anybody else checks out the site click on "what it does"link and check out the tunebox section.
