Ouch, I heard that punch from here...

Post by silver_vibe »

I don't know how many GenVibers are following the HiDef format war between Toshiba (HDDVD) and Sony (BluRay), but Toshiba finally got a major deal: Paramount Drops Bluray Support.Throughout most of 2007, the tide has been in BluRay's favor. Although PS3's console sales are not too good for gaming, they are great for getting BluRay players in homes. As a result, BluRay movie sales have outpaced HDDVD movie sales 2:1 for 2007 even though standalone HDDVD players are far outselling stand alone BluRay players. Then Blockbuster announced they would only rent BluRay movies in their stores (both formats will remain for their online renting). Then Target announced they would only sell BluRay players in their stores (not counting the HD DVD add-on to the XBOX). Not to mention that before today, HD DVD only had Universal supporting them exclusively (BluRay has Sony Pictures, Disney, FOX and MGM exclusive). When I heard today's announcement, I thought finally Toshiba does something in response with some meat. Which is why I say: Ouch, I heard that punch from here...Transformers (HD DVD exclusive) vs. Spiderman 3 (BluRay exclusive) this holiday season.Announcement: http://www.highdefdigest.com/n...D/874

That's why I don't want BluRay to "win" before dual format players can get below $300. I prefer the formats coexist - if players can play both seamlessly, it becomes irrelevant to consumers and there is still competition available to hopefully keep cost down.

bluray ftw! just looking at who backs what, bluray will probably be the dominate and HD will just be like dvd+r...sitting there in the corner but still alive.

HDDVD now has some major exclusivity that can't be overlooked: Transformers, Shrek 3, Matrix Trilogy, Heros season 1 will be HDDVD exclusive. They also have the porn industry, which many think is what made VHS beat Beta - although that is not so crucial this time because of the internet.I don't think HDDVD can win at this point, but who knows: can you imagine the tide shift if the HDDVD camp can get one more major blow in (such as getting Disney to release in both formats)?

Transformers is not coming on Bluray?????(removed)!!! Money talks, why the heck are they doing this exclusive bs? release in dual format like they did before when VHS and DVD would be released at the same time and let the consumer decide who wins. I was looking forward to seeing Transformers on Bluray nowI'm pissed....good thing I have a highend DVD player.

HDDVD costs so much less for comparable specs. All things being equal, wouldn't the masses choose the lower cost route? What does the extra space of BluRay really give the consumer anyway? As long as the disk can hold 2 hours of 1080p I'd be happier paying 40% less (compression does wonders). The fact that the PS3 allows gamers to watch HD movies combined with the BluRay exclusives is why they are winning in the movie sales (imho). Aren't you watching BluRay on a PS3 as opposed to a stand alone player?

OFF TOPIC i dont' want hd-dvd or blu-ray. they are obsolete, i want the hhd-dvvbb-bvd. vid here http://rvb.roosterteeth.com/ar...d=242ON TOPIC. i'm still very happy with dvd. i hope they don't kill off dvd's just because of these damn new over copy right protected things. btw, i don't condone pirating movies because i still wish on going into them. i've had numerous offers for a copy of this movie or that one and i never buy OR borrow it, if the movie is good i support it. i let my money try and give hollywood an idea of what a good movie is. i personally belive a person shouldn't have to spend $2k to be able to watch a movie with "special" features. oh, i can still have the movie playing while i'm browsing the movie? (removed)? if i have the desire to see another scene it probably means the current one sucks and i don't wanna see it, or i want to see a certain one, and in the second case i'll just choose "scene selections" from the main menu without the movie playing. and PIP with the movie playing and behind the scenes features? no. just no. i have a memory, when they are talking about that 50 foot jump over the bridge onto a moving barge while on fire, i think i can remember how it was in the movie.... "fire, boat, bridge, got it". the only reason i can think of having this feature if you are sooo soo soo busy in your life you can't spend the time to watch the movie an maybe another day the extra stuff on the disk. usually i watch movies with some depth to them so a distraction like extra features as i'm watching it takes away a lot of the movie. end up missing some subtle nuance that adds so much more to it. would you like to go into a movie theater and have some person with a big hat sitting infront of you while a person next to you is talking about the movie and etc.? i don't.

Neither format is going to win. Microsoft backing HDDVD and Sony Bluray. I see a format in the near future that encompasses both formats. The best thing HD-dvd has going for them right now is that there is a stand alone player now for under $200. HD DVD is the first to reach this bench mark. Closest stand alone for Bluray is I believe in the mid $400 dollar range.

Quote »i'm still very happy with dvd.Yup. What the hell extra will these fancy schmancy technologies give me, who doesn't have some 200" plasma widescreen thing mounted to the wall or even a home theater system? DVD is more than adequate for those such as myself. We don't even have a TV that has RCA inputs, we have to plug the DVD player into the VCR which connects to the TV via coax. Yeah, going out and buying some several hundred dollar DVD player is really going to make a dramatic difference in our viewing, that's going to be money well spent! If it ain't broke, don't fix it, that's what I say. But I heard last Christmas, the good ol' DVD was considered dead by the industry. Bummer.

Didn't sony also have all of the rights to the lazer disc and look where that is now.

Im just happy to have my Samsung DVD player, no HD. Works for me. Once one of these things comes on top and the price drops, maybe I'll upgrade. But for now, I am waiting for my phone to come available, LG Venus baby!!!!

I suppose I chose my part of this war as soon as I claimed loyalty to my Xbox 360. I did just get the HD DVD add on this Monday, and I'm overly impressed. I personally would love to see the exclusivity be dropped (my fiance loves Disney movies, and I can't get them on HD), but I'm glad more titles are coming this way for my player. I'll be interested as this war continues.

BluRay just struck back with a major blow: Warner is going BluRay exclusiveThe timing of this announcement is no coincidence - I'm sure it's meant to squelch any holiday sales numbers HD-DVD has for the 2007 Christmas season. I personally was hoping for some strong sales figures from HD-DVD.I really had hoped both formats would survive long enough for dual format players to drop to $300. I want competition. This announcement seems like a death blow to HD-DVD to me. Toshiba needs to do something drastic now to hope for a coexistence, but I cannot imagine anything that would make much of an impact now.

Now that Universal has followed warner brothers, Toshiba is doing something, having a fire sale on HD-DVDs. I don't own either, partly because I've been waiting to see which to buy. Now that PS3 is looking a lot more tempting
