Anyone know of any quick tricks for (very) noisy lifters? Obviously a valve job would be the best way to go, but are there any cheaper options (better oils, etc...)? I posted this in off-topic since it's not my Vibe with the problem.
'86 Ford Ranger 4WD. 2.9L V6. Nice little truck, but it's embarrassing to drive it with this condition. The good news is, it's not affecting the way the engine runs.
Yeah, sort of what I thought. I wouldn't normally worry too much about valve chatter, but this is ridiculous. To answer the inevitable question, I'm certain it's not a rod bearing, it's not a constant sound. Just sounds like a sticky lifter. It needs to have the valve covers pulled and the gaskets replaced anyway. Maybe it just needs it all. Man, this is why I hate buying used cars sometime.
Well, I'm pretty certain it's just a lifter. It's loudest around the valve covers. I'll have it checked out. Just thought I'd see if anyone knew of anything that might free it up for now so it's a little less irritating.
Yep, tried a similar product today. I guess it'll just have to be driven a bit and see if it loosens up. Oh well. Thanks for the posts. At least I know I'm headed in the right direction.
