Anyone familiar with canine cancer?

I would greatly appreciate any info. My girl (11 years old next month) recently had surgery with her 2nd mammary tumor in the same spot. The first was in 2005 (benign) and this one they said was "Simple Adeno Carcinoma". I have been through this before, so I'm very upset. With both my dogs who have gone through this, they were spayed late because we tried to show them.**PLEASE** if you have a female puppy, have her SPAYED before the first cycle!! It **SIGNIFICANTLY** reduces the risk of mammary tumors.I would appreciate any info. Thank you,debi & Sukoshi-chan

Sorry to hear Debi. I have heard about spaying before the first cycle reduces chances of certain cancers. I have also heard that waiting until after the first cycle reduces other types of cancers. It seems like your damned if you do and damned if you don't. By baby boy "Zephyr" (6 yrs. old) had a Thyroid Carcinoma tumor removed from his neck in November. It was a very hard surgery for him and us. He had Palliative Radiation treatments on 12/14, 12/21 & 1/4. He got a little sick from those treatments, but he is good otherwise. He had his first Chemo treatment (Adriamycin) on 1/11 (he is doing great) and will have 4 more chemo treatments every 3 weeks. He will also be on anti-inflammatories(Piroxicam) for probably the rest of his life as well as check-ups 4 times a year with x-rays. It is sad to see your baby go thru these things. I totally feel for you. I hope she gets better soon. Do you have any chemo or radiation treatments planned?

my older dog had some sort of cancer, wasnt sure what it was, but i just know we caught it a little to late and we had to put her down, she was maybe 10 yrs old or so

B.C., I'm glad to hear baby Zephyr is doing well. I don't even think they even have canine cancer treatments here. And if they did, I most likely couldn't afford it. Sorry to hear about this... Do you have pet insurance?We do and our cat just had two tumors removed from his ears. Not cancerous but no one knew until removed. Insurance paid for 1/3 of the bill and we got our money in two weeks from paperwork receipt. Got the insurance because previous cat had kidney failure and a kidney flush would have been $2000. Not that it would have saved him but after that my wife said we are getting insurance for the next one.

Sorry to hear about this. Good luck. My father-in-law had a great dane who died of cancer last year. She was 7 yrs. old and before it was all over, she had to have her front right leg amputated and went through chemo at Texas A&M. I can only imagine how much money they spent on chemo alone.

Thank you, everyone...her 11th birthday is Feb. 10, and no, we don't have pet insurance. I doubt any pet insurance would touch us...she's disabled from an injury when she was younger. She's already been through a lot. She will always be my first baby, and I'm going to do what I can for her.
