HELP! 6 disc M&T CD player dead in 2003 GT

Post by Wreck »

OK, so i'm tailgating New Years Eve before a bowl game and I decide to crank the CD player up in the Vibe, running it completely off the battery. Now, I have to admit i'm drinking quite heavily so I forget about it...for several hours. The next day after the game, the battery is (of course) completely dead and I get a jump-start and try to operate the CD player. The radio works fine. The display is fine. The unit will not switch to CD/AUX mode. None of the CD related buttons will do anything. The little red/green light next to the CD opening does not come on at all, even before it would blink when starting the car.I'm at a big loss here. Not sure what could have happened. It was being used continually, at a very high volume for an extended period of time. Any ideas at all???The other thing is, the next day, the alarm went off, even though the battery had no juice, and I coul not shut it off. Luckily the horn was so weak by that point you could barely hear it. That's the last time I saw that light on the CD player work.

Perhaps it needs to be rebooted. You could try to yank the fuses (there are 2 at least that I can think of at the moment) or just disconnect the battery cable for a couple minutes and reconnect.I don't know what a changer does, but with the way single discs will engage the CD mechanism and spit the CD out as soon as power is reapplied, perhaps disconnecting the power and reconnecting will help. Who knows, maybe it freaked something out when jump starting thanks to the crazy voltage fluctuations it was likely seeing. Hopefully jump starting it didn't kill it, that's entirely possible.

First, if you completed killed the battery, you can't just jump it and drive the car and expect it to ever regain full charge. It simply cannot do that. The alternator is not capable of reviving a fully drained battery. You either need to hook it up to a trickle charger, take it to a pep boys or autozone for recharging, or get it replaced by the dealer. If not, you're going to continue to run into issues with the battery being dead. I had the same thing happen in my G6. Ran the battery to the end, and it NEVER regained any sort of capacity. It often left me stranded in parking lots and even on the side of the highway once, just from using the hazard flashers. So get that battery issue fixed right quick...Second, did you check all your fuses? I know some of the G6 guys have had weird occurances where one of the multiple fuses that controls "some" function of the radio blows, causing it to only partially work or act erratically. Check ALL your fuses - under the dash and under the hood - because the jump coulda blown a fuse, which might be an explanation for that crazy behavior.Otherwise, as has been said, you might have just done it in somehow.
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!

A very similar thing has happened to my MT 6disc changer. After leaving the keys in the car and draining the battery, I got a jump and my car started. On the drive home I realized that my CD player did not work, but the radio (AM & FM) was just fine. The CD player shows a disc loaded, with 1:23 played off of a track, but i can't Eject, Load, switch discs, etc. I figured that since the power was working for the CD functions, then it couldn't be a fuse issue. After reading this thread, I'll check those tomorrow and report what I can figure out.BTW, This forum rocks, I've spent the last 2 hours reading threads!

OK, so on the advice of ColonelPanic and ragingfish i checked all the fuses. Started with the engine block fuses, and yanked the ones for DOME and AMP. They were not broken, so I reinserted them and fired 'er up. VOILA! My CD functions were once again working. I would have never guessed that it would be a fuse problem, but apparantly the jumpstart knocked some functions out of whack, and a hard reboot was just what the doctor ordered. Thanks, guys!Prologue: So I called back the pontiac dealer service manager who had told me yesterday that it would be $450+ to have them yank the radio, plus the cost of repair/replacement, and told him that it was a simple fuse issue. He seemed stunned, then thanked me, and told me that was valuable information. I don't even change my own oil and this guy's all 'you're awesome" to me. Thank you, internet!
