30,000 miles

Post by Aquasax »

I just hit 30,000 miles this morning - 9 days before my vibe's 1 year birthday. First question - anyone else hit 30,000 yet? Problems arise? Also - what are thoughts on an extended warranty. It expires at 36,000 miles. Is it worth it?

The only time I think a extended warranty is worth the price is if you have had problems with the car during the warranty period. I put almost 33K miles on my commute vehicle a year. I would put the money equal to the extended warranty in an account, and use that for vehicle repairs. Many things are not covered under the extended warranty, or they want to verify all maintenance was performed according to the manual. (I put 100K on my Chev Venture in 3 years, and did not have any expense except for front brakes.)

Here is what someone once suggested to me. Buy an extended warranty as if it was insurance. Use it to cover only catastrophic loss. He offers the dealer $50 above their cost on the policy that covers just the powertrain. And chooses the biggest deductible. Ask the dealer to provide you with the costs of the three GM plans for 36m/100,000m at the three deuctibles. Then decide to buy, self insure, or go without.

I hit 30000 miles a while back (current odo is about 32600 miles). I didn't get the extended warranty, figuring that if I had any problems, they would surely show up before my 60000 km (37000 mi) warranty expired. Well, I had some problems -- and it took GM 5.5 months to figure it out. To compensate me, GM is currently processing the paperwork to extend my warranty to 100000 km (62000 miles). The extended warranty is probably worth it, especially if your payments are low to start with, so that extra warranty doesn't increase your payment all that much.

For all of you with higher mileage, has your Check Engine Light ever come on?

Never had a check engine light. The only warning lamp I've seen is the low washer fluid indicator (only available in Canada).

"For all of you with higher mileage, has your Check Engine Light ever come on?"I haven't had the Check Engine Light come on at all. I plan on taking mine in this week or next to have it checked out before the warranty is out...but I don't expect that they will find anything.-Savoy-

Think about it. i payed I think $3000 for a 100000 mile extended warranty. Suppose my transmission goes for some reason. A tranny can run as little as $1000, as much as 5 or 6! yes, it is somewhat of an expense...but it can also be the best investment you make. Besides, with my extended warranty, I have no deductible...and when I go in, I can ask them to look at ANYTHING that's bugging me, and I don't pay for labor, and if something's wrong, I don't pay for it either...I've never bought an extended warranty and regretted it. Ya know?

But I feel an extended warranty is a more than worthy investment...I've had four cars, each with an extended, and it seemed more problems occurred in the 80-100k mile range...and I never had to pay for any of them. Just because you'd rather take the risk of a major problem going wrong, doesn't mean you have to try to put others down who thing long term...Plus, come 100k, my goal will be to have enough $$ to trade in for a new one...so might as well never pay for a major part failure if I don't have to.

Just turned 28,000 miles this week. So far no major problems. My check engine light has not come on yet. I have bought extended warrenties in the past and I guess I have been lucky because I haven't had to use them. I guess I am betting that the Vibe will be reliable due to the Toyota heritage.

Personally I never buy extended warranty on anything. That's always been my plan. If I ever need to shell out some serious cash for anything I am POSITIVE I have saved more than that amount over the years. You can insure yourself to the max for "peace of mind" but when you add it all up... ouch. You can drop thousands in a very short time, why do you think they offer it? It's because they make a killing on it and don't have to shell out nearly as much as they bring in. I say take your chances and look after your vehicle, it is one of the most reliable drivetrains on earth!
