p0133 CEL + Bad Gas Mileage

Post by stoutvibe »

Hi Gang - My vibe just had its first CEL at 59,000 miles. I have an 04 base manual. I had the CEL read at autozone and it came up as p0133 which is defined as "oxygen sensor circuit slow response (bank 1, sensor 1). This is the sensor located before the cat. I had been suspecting a bad O2 sensor because of my quick decline in gas mileage from around 33 to 28 back in November. I recently replaced the O2 sensor about two weeks ago, but my mileage has yet to improve at all, and has possibly worstened (hard to tell if it went down to 25 because of all the snow we received, or other causes). I double checked the O2 sensor wires and all seems to be well. Any ideas what problem is causing this consistent 5mpg drop in gas mileage over the past few months?. Air filter is clean, used same gas, oil changed every 3,000 with plain 5w-30. FYI - overall, my past winters have averaged 33mpg solid, and summers around 35, so this is definitely abnormal.

I have the PO133 also & my dealer said PO133 is intake leak on start up. He says the intake manfold Orings/gasket need replacement. I only have 19k on it. I informed him."That's just not right. Orings don't go bad in less than 2 years!" My dealer is doing this obviously under warranty. But I am waiting to see if the code returns. I wonder who is correct the dealer or Autozone? With bad mileage. Yours maybe the intake orings...Also your O2 sensor is warrantied till 7/70k by fed law. I started another thread for the PO133. Take a look. ALSO... Has you code returned???

jasonvibe, in http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=28027 you saidQuote, originally posted by jasonvibe » Dealer showed me there was a bulletin to change the intake manifold gaskets if a 133 appeared. I did a quick look, perhaps not thorough enough, but I could not find such a TSB for the Vibe. Do you remember if the TSB was specifically for a Vibe, or if it was for GM vehicles in general? Some GM TSBs are for specific models of cars, or specific engines, and some are for all GM cars and light trucks. I know that intake manifold gaskets are an issue for some GM engines, but a general GM TSB for a specific engine problem might not apply to Vibes. The Vibe service manual talks about testing the O2 sensor and wiring, and doing electrical checks on the circuit. It also says to pull the O2 sensor and look for any deposits on the surface that might affect it's performance. If they didn't even do that, I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that it was intake manifold gaskets, I would probably do what the DTC indicates and replace the O2 sensor like stoutvibe did.-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-stoutvibe you replaced the O2 sensor, did the CEL come back or did replacing it seem to fix that part of the problem? As for the drop in gas mileage, that is a tough one, there are a lot of things that can cause that. I have a manual tranny Vibe and if my mileage dropped to 25 I'd be sure something was wrong also. Some drop in the winter is expected, but this winter mpg is worse than your previous Vibe winters. Maybe the gas station you always use switched to a less powerful gas this winter than they did for previous winters. Did you check your tire pressures, and is you wheel alignment still good? It could be possible, although I don't know how to verify, but maybe the O2 sensor problem affected the catalytic converter. The weather is getting warmer, are you seeing any increase in mpg, or are you still down 5?

Well, apparently it's that time of the year again...oxygen sensor replacement time! The vibe just threw a P0133 error code again this week. Also noticed the same drop in gas mileage over the past few weeks as with the last failure, so I was almost anticipating it to error out. This means my Bosch replacement oxygen sensor lasted about 9 months, or 8,000 miles. At this point the car has 69,000 miles on it and I just find it hard to believe that I can burn through 2 oxygen sensors without something else being wrong. joatmon - the error did come back the last time, but it takes it a week or so to re-appear. My take on this is that it is failing slowly thus causing it a long time to trip a CEL. I am curious about O2 sensor failure being linked to cat failure as you suggested. Does anyone else have any theories on this. Here's some info on the p0133 error code:P0133 OBD-II Trouble CodeTechnical DescriptionOxygen Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank1, Sensor1)What does that mean? This involves the front oxygen sensor on Bank 1. This code indicates the engine air fuel ratio is not being adjusted by the oxygen sensor signal or the ECM as expected to do so, or not adjusted as often as expected to do so once the engine is warmed or under normal engine use.SymptomsYou will likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms.CausesA code P0133 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:The oxygen sensor is faulty The wiring to the sensor is broken / frayed There is an exhaust leak

Reading the condition of the bad 02 sensor should point you in the right direction.

hey stoutso is there any TSB here?I have 110k km on mine (69k miles)...(04 base vibe) warranty below says the o2 sensor is good to be replaced until 70k so I have to get mine in fast if this is a warranty item.My sensor has been off and on for the better part of the summer. The mileage was ok and actually I had the best mileage I've ever had in the fall. However now that the light came back on (it is off today though) the mileage is terrible...Anything to do when I bring it into the dealer so I don't get ripped...many possibilities here and I don't want the dealer experimenting with the car...I believe just pulling the 02 sensor and cleaning is all that is required. Here is what the possible solutions say about the code:The simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.If the code comes back, the problem is more than likely the front Bank 1 oxygen sensor. You will likely wind up replacing it but you should also consider these possible solutions: * Check and fix any exhaust leaks * Check for wiring problems (shorted, frayed wires) * Check the frequency and amplitude of the oxygen sensor (advanced) * Check for a deteriorating / contaminated oxygen sensor, replace if necessary * Check for inlet air leaks * Check the MAF sensor for proper operationFrom the Toyota forumP0133 Oxygen Sensor Circuit Slow Response(Bank 1 Sensor 1)Response time for heated oxygen sensor's voltage output to change from rich to lean, or from lean to rich, is 1 second or more during idling after engine is warmed up. (2 trip detection logic) * Open or short in heated oxygen sensor circuit * Heated oxygen sensor * Air induction system * Fuel pressure * Injector * Engine Control Unit
