The garage door opener we had was here when we bought this house in 1986. This was prior to the federal safety rules. With young grandchildren I was concerned about safety so when I saw a Chamberlain 3/4 hp belt drive with battery back-up advertised at Lowes after Thanksgiving for $178 ($50 off), plus a special $69 (reg $120) installation deal, I jumped on it. Included two regular remotes and a key chain remote, plus a keypad to mount outside the door. The independent contractor who installed it was great. He fully explained all the features and even adjusted the tension spring which was no longer providing the necessary counterbalance. There's a motion detector which turns the light on when you enter the garage from the house. The belt is gtd for 10 years and unlike drunkenmaxx needs no lubrication. It is a lot quieter than my old screw drive. When the door closes it gently slows as it nears the ground. The other advantage (besides me trying to install it which would take me two days and I'd still screw it up) to buying it installed is that in Ohio that avoids the sales tax. Perhaps the best $247 I ever spent.

That's cool!! One thing I have to ask about the outside keypad though... Is it "wireless" or are there wires routed out to it through the wall??? The REASON I ask is when I was living in a different place than now, we had a door with basically the same set up. The PROBLEM with those keypads IS, they can easily be ripped off the door frame/wall on the outside and the 2 wires touched together and boom your door goes up.... FALSE SECURITY...I disconnected mine after I found this out....
yup my parents outside keypad is wireless, comes in super handy when i get home late...after drinking...and need to get in the house and its cold outside and the keys are to hard to find in the dark

Useful if you go on vacation as there may be hackers out there who can create a code that works. or since the possible numbers are 0000 to 9999might be able to punch in #'s until they find the one that works.

if someone wanted to hack your garage door...it would be easier to break in else where...and well "hacking" the numbers is very inefficient and would take much longer than anyone would want to be sitting outside of your house....
Thanks for the heads up. We managed to break our old Stanley opener a couple weeks ago (left a rake in the doorway and something inside the mechanism snapped when it went into its safety reverse mode). I was just starting to look into the options for a replacement. The wireless keypad will definitely be useful since I come and go by bicycle more often than by car. Had been using a key-operated switch, but, as mentioned above, those are a security weak point and also add to the weight of my keychain.
