HVAC Fan speeds jacked up!

Post by wyldejackyl »

Recently I noticed that my slow speed is no longer "slow" - it's "off." I have a feeling it may have something to do with the blower motor resistor, but have no experience with those on Vibes. Where is it located, and what are the resistance values for each speed? I assume "high" has no resistance. Depending on where it is and how it's incorporated into the surrounding electronics, the thought has crossed my mind to just source some power resistors and build a new pack myself- cheating both the dealer, and making future maintenance easy (since I'll know where it is and it won't be proprietary). Any information you guys can offer about this? Our car has 106k on it..I doubt I'm the only one having the same issues...

For the $30 it costs for a new one,why bother.Just replace the resistor.

The nearest $tealer charges about $20/quart for T-IV transmission fluid. I paid almost $200 for a serpentine belt tensioner. Things aren't even close to reasonable when it comes to parts in the Chicago area! I may just buy one, but would be happier with the option of having the resistance values so I could do either/or. Where is this thing located anyway? Behind the control dials or nearest the blower motor behind the glove box?

Sweet, that's a hell of a lot cheaper than the local places would charge, I'm sure. Thanks for the part numbers!

So where is this thing again? i have the glovebox off, and all I see is the bottom of the blower motor (looks like a cadmium plated disc with a rubber insulator), and the harness that plugs into it. It leads from there to a major bundle that's held by a white bracket on the right side. I found the engine computer, the airbag wiring..but this box is not so apparent. Is it located on the tailhousing of the blower or something? The computer is in the way, do I need to remove it? EDIT: I think I found it..it's a whole lot smaller than I expected, but how in the hell do I get it out? i'm blocked from the bottom by the engine computer, the left by the mounting bracket with a sharp ear sticking out of it, and on the right from that big wire harness. I can't get it at from the top because of the blower assembly, nor the back because of the firewall and I'm not a contortionist. What has to come off?
