Wow, Can't get a head unit.

Post by Kevzaz »

Wow, this is so gay. Ok, So all I wanted for christmas was a new head unit for my car. And my mom said she can get it for me, and I got all excited, I narrowed it down to ONE head unit I wanted, and I would be happy just getting it for christmas. I showed it to my mom and she said ya, I asked my dad and he goes, no, because I would have to take my whole car apart to put it in. And i am like, thats stupid, no you don't, and he is like, the car is in my name, so I say no. UGHHH I am so pissed off right now. That is all I wanted and that **** ******* of a father has to say no, I hate him so bad, he is a **** *** ******* **** ******. RAWR, screw him, he wont get a present either.

you might want to get him a present anyways because he may just be trying to let you not get too excited so you're surprised when you get one

Doubt it, he freaked out on my brother when he got one installed on his car. And besides, my dad knows jack about the type of head unit I want and stuff.

Not trying to offend bud, but from what I gathered, you don't even have your license yet, you have a new car to drive (and a good one at that ), and you hate your dad because he won't let you install a HU on his car that he's letting you drive. Granted, I don't agree with his reasoning (that's about the safest, easiest mod to do, and can be easily undone), but come on. I would have killed to get a new car at your age. I had to drive around in a $400 beater until I could save up for a down payment for something better.

Well i know how you feel , my dad did the same thing to me at 16. But he is right its his car and I know your "mad" at him but you might be slightly over reacting. does your car have a cd player now? tape deck? theres always ways to get your music in your stock deck with out taking it apart, you just gotta deal with the slightly more hassle of it. Wait till you get older...you'll understand

hehe, I get what you are saying, yes he still has his. My mom just freaked out on him. Because she asked him if he ever put a cd player in his car, and he said no. And she freaked out saying he is a lying peace of ****, and if I want a cd player for christmas, then I will get a cd player. Then she promised me I will get it. I win =D

Considering the Vibe only came with a CD player, I'm inclined to believe that you already have a decent CD player installed in the car. You should be thankful that your folks have given you such a nice car as your first and perhaps not get all bent out of shape because you can't have the flashy radio you want. The one that's in there already will work just as well. Fact of life is we often can't get what we want, so we have to make the best out of what we are given. Most of us weren't as fortunate as you are, many of our first cars were far from what you have. Don't take it for granted! I bought a Monte Carlo that had a small engine fire for my first car and rebuilt it myself with junkyard parts. Wasn't quite reliable, got horrible mileage, and oh yeah - had its original 1982 vintage analog pushbutton tuning AM/FM radio, not even lucky enough to have a tape deck. Of course, I used my money that I had earned to upgrade the radio after a while.

Settle down man!Trust me you won't get your way by throwing a fit. and calling people names, telling you hate them...Do some searching on the genvibe site.... print out a picture of what you would have to do to install the cd player, explain that it is just the bezel that needs to be removed, not the entire dash. Do this calmly, show him that it isn't as complicated as it might seem. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't...What I found was when I bought one of my dad's cars from him when I started switching stuff around at first he didn't like the idea of what I was doing... when I showed him the cd player installed, explained to him how easy it was, he was like, man I wish I would have done that a long time ago...Granted the car didn't have a CD player to start with.On the vibe: I bought the car from my dad, the first thing I did was tinted the windows. My dad loved it, he was again like: man, I wish I would have done that.... Now he wants to tint the windows on his Prius.

So when i first put subs in my taurus...my dad was like HECK no... but well...i got them free so anyway. I was in the driveway about to install them my self..and I was like...so dad where do you think I should ground the amp...he ended up helping me install it and well we had a good time, he didnt like that i had them but since i had the subs already he helped out. Maybe you could print the instructions go over them with him, showing how easy it is. After that he knew that i wasnt stupid and let me do all the car work on our families cars, stereo installs to repairs etc. with out questioning my skillz.

I can relate to both sides of this argument, but as a parent, I think a good approach would be to ask dear old Dad for his assistance.Obviously to get the approval first is important, but you could try something like "I would like to put a head unit in the Vibe, could you help me with it?".It would definitely work better than throwing a hissy-fit trying to get your way.

So I was like, then he said like, so now I'm all like.I wouldn't sweat it too much, why not save up the cash and tell him you will pay to have it installed professionally, and you will keep the stock unit so it can be put back in when the time comes.Other than that, you pop the silver bezel from the top, then pull it up and out. Take your 8mm hex and remove 4 bolts, then pull out head unit, disconnect antenna and harness. Then you plug in new unit to harness with a connection kit, plug in antenna and replace.

I always find acting more adult in a situation like this helps SO much. Getting upset and calling names NEVER helps.I would love to have had a vibe when I was 16. I had a 96 bonneville which my mom totaled like 5 months later. then i got a 93 bonneville. that lasted me until last christmas and I got a 95 lumina. I'm 23 and just now got a decent, reliable car. Feel lucky for having a reliable nice looking ride. When the car is in your name - you can do whatever you want to do with it.

Feel lucky for having a reliable nice looking ride. When the car is in your name - you can do whatever you want to do with it.You should be so lucky, my first car was a 1984 Ford Escort L, automatic, no A/C, AM radio only. Got it for $250. Someone broke into it to take a speaker I won out of the hatch. Got a dark red hatch to replace it, the car itself was rustoleum gray all faded and worn, waffle grille, chrome bumpers, and a carbureted engine. Got it when I was 17 so that was in 1998, I was driving a 14 year old car.Next came a 1992 Saturn SL1 with 170,000 miles on it, had an oil burn issue, drove until 220,000. Then a 1994 Saturn SL1 with 70,000, drove till 160,000.My first car I paid for in full and owned on my own was a 2002 Honda Civic EX Coupe 5 spd. that I got in 2003. Since then after 2.5 years I sold it and got my AWD XR Trix, again a 2005 one year old certified pre owned like my Civic was. If my parents handed me keys (regardless if I paid them for the car) to a car that was less than 5 years old, I would have been sooooooo lucky.

Hey Kevin, maybe you should be glad that you even have a car at your age. Once it is paid off and in your name, you can do whatever you want with it. The OEM stereo isn't all that bad and you could always subscribe to XM radio, add a Sirius Radio Receiver or an Ipod2Car connector in the meantime.

Not tearing apart, I was replying more to futureviber. I tossed some advice on page 1. To me I would think if he acts more adult and composes himself as an adult to his parents, they will return the favor. In other words, don't make it a huge deal in front of them anymore, and don't mention it again until Christmas. And inbetween that time, I would be nice, pleasant and be mature in front of them so that they will maybe loosen up. Or at least his dad will. One thing buddy, wait till your engaged, you get thrown right back in the "can I get this?" arena, LOL. Just kidding, only unless your soon to be or current wife is a control freak.

Jesus, some of you guys just freaked on me. Obviously you guys don't understand, I never got an allowance my whole life, I pay insurance and car payments, and you guys are calling me spoiled? I didn't get the car for free, it was a more of, I can get the car. I was never spoiled in my whole life, I am not the kind of kid that gets everything, I get hand-me-downs all the time and never anything new. That's what I am really happy to have this car to call it my own (even though it is kind of a hand-me-down). So I want to be able to treat it how I want. I guess if you guy's knew me as a person, and not what I posted. But I guess that isn't really possible. Besides, last year, I barely got anything for Christmas, and it made me upset because my siblings got nice stuff and I didn't, so my mom promised me that she would get me something nice next Christmas, and its not even like it is an outrageous price. I think they might get it for me. If not, I will be really disappointed. I will try being mature about it, but my dad is so stubborn, he wont even want to see how it is done.

Parents will be stubborn buddy, not much you can do about that. Look at me, I'm 26, my fiance is 25 and we both live at home still cause we are saving for a wedding next year and a house. But even at 26 I still hear it day in and day out. Heck I get called out for being out late still on a weeknight. Not that anything comes of it, but its just parents and the way they are. I say keep to the mature thing and ride it out. Worse comes to worse, your stuck with the stock head unit. Think of some points you can drop to make your case. Do you have an ipod, ok, well maybe the HU you want can play auxillary and the stock one can't. Think of things that are valid discussions, not arguments. And if they cut you off and say no, don't push the issue, just say, ok, and walk away calmly. That really is the best way to approach said issue.

Thats kind of how things went the first time, except I came on the computer and I freaked out on here. =p But, umm, me and my dad had a bit of a civilized talk about it, and he asked my if there is an adapter that I can hook up? And I said ya, but it is like 80 dollars and kind of complicated to install, a new head unit would be easier and better in the long run.

That is my last last last resort. But I really don't want to use it because of the very horrible quality. I am an audiophile. I am very sensitive in the ears, and like I need things to sound good. But, if worse comes to worse, I will suffer.

i-trips only work good if the ipod is also charging at the same time, ie. the monster one is good cuz it charges and does the fm at the same time. but yes its not as good as wired but well...i didnt want to spend 100 on a adapter at the time...

Well, I can relate to your situation kevin. I went through the same crap that you're going through now when I just got the car from my mom and some of the members of this site harassed me just the same as they are you. It is your dad's car and blah blah blah. Drunkenmaxx remembers when I first joined don't you buddy They are right though, it is his car and he has a say in what you can and can't do with it...but...Everyone likes to argue with: "at least you have a car, when I was 16 I had to drive a 1970 Dodge conversion van with 3 speed manual, no heat, and a rust hole in the floor." I saved enough money for years and I found a great car to buy at 16 years old but my mother bought the Vibe and took my $3500...hey, $3500 for a brand new car wasn't a bad deal though so I wasn't complaining until the fighting started when I was ready to begin modding it.So you know how I got around that??? I bought the stuff anyways...you get the toys you really want and you learn about how cars really work when you have to install everything yourself. GREAT learning opportunity. Depends on how your parents attitudes are, they might take away the car but they most likely will not take it away for good because then they lose a key item to use against you when they are mad at you.A lot of the people on this site scolded me for it or told me I was too young and I didn't have the money nor did I understand, that I should save my money for more important things like school and all that. They couldn't have been more wrong. My car is gorgeous (IMO). I have almost all of the parts I dreamed of owning and guess what....my mom ABSOLUTELY LOOOOVES my car now and she tells me that all the time. With regards the the money aspect, now I have the Vibe, used to have a Taurus as well for the winter and work, two motorcycles (a Ducati and a Ninja), I pay my own bills, I pay for school, and I'm about to go into Pharmacy school so what happened there? Not saying it's a good idea, but just test your parents and see what they do, they may get irritated but you have to show them ways that the benefits outweigh the costs. No you don't have to take apart the whole car, your dad obviously knows nothing about electronics. You just un-snap the radio face plate, take out four screws and wire up the new radio. Another thing, make sure you have as much fun with it as you can now, because once you go into college and the bills stack up, it's harder and harder to buy car parts I just think people forget what it was like to be a kid sometimes. All of them were there before so they don't necessarily have to agree with you but the should AT LEAST understand what you are dealing with.

Kevin, do as Merzbow says, lie to your stupid parents, diosobey them, see what you can get away with, and then come back here and brag about it.
