alright, i have a base 04 auto vibe. only mods are stereo. story is as follows, it is early morning and a bunch of us are hanging out watching horror movies as our little halloween party get together. the town has laws about having cars in the street from 2-5am or some such. we all decide to move our cars into his driveway. i was busy cleaning a mess, so i tossed my keys to my friend. well, the moron didn't turn off the e-brake as he was driving it into the driveway. i find this out later, once i left to go home, and i have a CEL. i just checked the code, it's p0500. it is a malfunction of the speed sensor. firstly, how? and secondly, where is the vechicle speed sensor located to i can take a look at it and see if any wires are messed up? some of the Symptoms may include: * loss of anti-lock brakes -my brakes work, haven't checked ABS though * the "anti-lock" or "brake" warning lamps on the dash may be lit - none of these * the speedometer or odometer may not work properly (or at all) -i think this is. don't know if my speed is off at all. * your vehicle's RPM limiter may be decreased -dunno. never push my vibe that hard. * the shifting of an automatic transmission may become erratic -only when the car is really cold, had this before the CEL though. * other symptoms may also be presenti checked other sites and it says the VSS is for cruise control. what exactly is the VSS for and will i have problems if i don't replace or fix it right away? one site said just clear it and see if it comes back. i would think that's a bad idea. thanks for your help.
ok, i decided to just go ahead and clear the code. after wards i turned off the car, pulled the reader, and started the car, no code. i then took it for a drive. no cel, tried cruise a bit, seemed to work. anti lock brakes, i tried to get them to do the pulse, but i don't think i was going fast enough or braking hard enough. everything seems to work. if anybody knows where the VSS is, can you let me know? i'd still like to check out the wiring.
The primary VSS wil be on the transmission. If you have ABS, then there is also sensor in each wheel hub, but I think those feed the ABScontrol, not the general seped signal usage by the car for spedometer, cruise, etc.I saw this in a service manual "The vehicle speed sensor is operating normally if the speedometer display is normal."
